As an out of state applicant, I’m curious as to if Seattle’s weather impacts the social life at UW.
I am a very outgoing person, and my fear is that the rain dampens (no pun intended) the social life because students stay indoors to avoid getting wet, leading to a rather slow experience.
Can any Seattleites or current students weigh in on this?
I was born and raised here and it’s never been a deterrent to socializing, in fact rain doesn’t keep locals from doing anything outside. We do everything in the rain from biking, hiking, walks, going to Husky games, you name it. You might want to invest in a waterproof rain jacket (with a hood) and boots to help keep you comfortable. I know our weather can be difficult on those unaccustomed to gray skies but don’t make rain a concern or a barrier before the rainy season even arrives. I’m thankful for the rain, it’s the reason it’s so beautiful and green here!
Green … except for this summer, when you had ash falling from the sky rather than rain. I generally agree with @pdwm56 but you also need to be prepared for very short periods of daylight in the winter in case you are from lower down in the states. That can affect you more than the rain.
Yes, that’s why I mentioned the gray, the short days and general lack of light are very hard on some people. It was a tough summer for me because of the heat and poor air quality, that keeps me inside.
Let’s talk about the plus side – like playing softball until midnight in August. I went to college in Portland and lived in Seattle later, and the rain never affected my social life. As @pdwm56 said, you get a hooded jacket or a poncho and just live with it. And then, years later, when you live in a somewhat less rainy area, you cheer when every wet day comes.
