Hey guys, I just started NCSU as a sophomore transfer in civil engineering. I'm originally from southern Va. I think I'm starting to get claustrophobic or something from NCSU's cramp layout and really starting to consider Virginia Tech for next year or possibly next semester. I'm not new to Raleigh or the triangle area in general, but I really feel uncomfortable around here. Any recommendations for outdoor activities around here??? Just about everyday I escape campus for fresh air... I know NCSU is a GREAT school academically, but I am still drawn to the small town feel of campuses like App State's and VT's...

Caniac08, Don’t give up on NCSU so quickly. You just got started. You will grow to love it (and you can’t be an engineer at ASU!)

There are lots of Greenways in Raleigh to for walking/running/biking,etc. Google “Lake Johnson, Raleigh NC”. It’s a beautiful park with a 150 acre lake off Avent Ferry Rd. There are Greenway trails, a great bridge over the lake and I think canoe/kayak rentals. My S is a runner and loves to go running there on the trails. There are also other greenway trails in Raleigh you can find online. Also, Pullen Park is adjacent to NCSU.

Check into intramurals/club sports at State that would get you outside with other students. S and friends played on the outdoor basketball courts regularly last yr. Pick-up games are always going on.

Lots of weekend off-campus excursions (hiking, camping, rafting, etc) are offered for students through the Student Rec. center Outdoor Adventures program. You can look it up on the NCSU website.
