Ramapo College Up and Coming?

I am seriously considering Ramapo. I visited the college and it is the nicest campus by far that I have seen. The cost would be a great help to my parents, because I was previously considering Fordham and Rutgers NB.

I am out of state, but received a nice scholarship.

I know Fordham is ranked much higher, as is Rutgers, but from my research, Ramapo is a fairly new college --completed in 1979. EVERY year it rises in the rankings. it is now at 25 in best Northeast Regionals.

I think if I could come out of college relatively debt free, rather than, say, Fordham, which would cost tens of thousands more a year, I am leaning towards Ramapo.

Anyone have experience with Ramapo?

I went to Ramapo and graduated a few years ago. I had a similar situation but was in state. I was looking at big name schools ie NYU, Boston University but also was given a really large Ramapo scholarship and the campus was the nicest I had seen so I figured I’d give it a shot and I really really loved it there. I would disagree that fordham and rutgers are ranked much higher than ramapo, maybe marginally but to be honest rankings don’t tell you the things that end up being important like what the professors are like, how campus life is, etc. I had really great relationships with many of my professors and I liked that it was a learning centered college, not research centered university. It made a difference in my education and I really have an awesome time living there as well. For me the money thing was really big because I knew I would go to graduate school of some kind afterwards, so to not have to worry about undergrad debt was huge. Now that i’m done with grad school i am verrrry happy that i don’t have undergrad loans to worry about.

Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Thanks for your input. Are internships available at Ramapo? Do you know how getting good internships compare at Ramapo vs. the bigger univeesities?

I’m not sure yet if I’m going for an MBA. If I decide not to, do you think I would be better off going for one of the big universities for undergrad? I also am looking at some big name universities.

I haven’t heard back from NYU yet, bit if I were to get into Stern Business, would I be crazy to go to Ramapo?

I’m from New Jersey and to be honest Ramapo isn’t even well known in its own state. Rutgers and Fordham are much better known than Ramapo and not just because they are bigger schools, they are nationally ranked universities while Ramapo is a small liberal arts college so they aren’t even considered in the same ranking.

Sorry for the typos in my earlier post – it was 2:05 am and I was typing on an iPad! :)

I myself never heard of Ramapo until someone else mentioned how nice it was. So I checked it out and applied. I kind of fell in love with the campus.

jerseygirl – did you go to a big name graduate school? Just curious. I’m seriously considering following in your footsteps, going to Ramapo now, and getting my masters somewhere prestigious. I REALLY liked that campus.

so looking at this i was wondering if i should apply to ramapo college
i have a 2.9 gpa and a 1200 sat score

plus i am also involved in religious programs like youth group
but many students in my grade also applied there its well known, athletcs and academically wise students higher than me

oh i forgot to mention i want to apply to the college of nursing

btw you got accepted right?well congrats good luck!

According to collegeboard.com, 15% of Ramapo accepted students have your GPA range. Your SAT scores are in a very good range for Ramapo. Give it a try! Your EC’s are great, I would say you have a pretty good chance.

Oh, I’m sorry, I thought your 1200 was reading and math only. I don’t know – can you retake the SAT, or try the ACT?

I got accepted herre with a really nice scholarship as well(practically go to school for free). My biggest worry is that I feel that the brightest and the strongest students aren’t really attracted to this school which could affect me as I might not be challenged enough. Also, like someone said, this school is really not well known and I’ve also heard that not the nicest students go there. One girl from my high school enrolled in Ramapo this year and let’s just say that she probably can’t teach herself a way out of a brown paper bag!

On a side note, anyone know anything about their Medical programs? Are there early assurance programs?

Ramapo has an honors college, which helps keep you with the students who are more interested in learning. I’m leaning towards the attitude that college is what you make of it. A super prestigious college might open some doors for you, but again, you have to make the best of even that.

My concern is will colleges like Rutgers or Fordham or NYU open enough doors to make the cost worth it? My grandfather never went to college at all, but worked his way up in the business world to make a very comfortable life for his family.

Of course, back in his day, not everyone went to college. I think college nowadays compares to a high school education back then, in that you couldn’t get a job without one. But at the end of the day, your drive and commitment to success is what really matters.

yonkersmallu27, no. You won’t get in here with your GPA and SAT scores.

I transferred from Fordham to Ramapo for financial reasons. It’s less prestigious and not as well known, but I’m actually finding that I like it much better than Fordham. I’m on the Dean’s List and have a 3.7 GPA, and am still planning on going to NYU Law.

Internships are usually available, but it depends on your major.

^ Let’s just say I want to major in chemistry or Biology to become a pharmacist(fingers crossed), will the fact that New Jersey, being the pharmacy capital of the United States, help me get internships easily? Or will students at Rutgers have an easier shot at getting them?

I know college is what you make of it, but some colleges open more doors for students than others. As a freshman who’s still trying to figure out my way through the new education system, I would like A LOT of help and guidance. To be honest, I’d rather have opportunities shoved at my face, than looking for obscure ones that show up from time to time.

sorry i did not see your question until now! I went to columbia university for my masters degree. i graduated in 09 and i know three other people who were at different columbia programs, at least 1 at nyu, and multiple at medical schoools like vanderbilt.

there are internships. i remember friends in business programs working at like mercedes benz and bmw because they have offices nearby. my accounting friends interned and got jobs at withum smith + brown which has offices all over NJ.

i think ramapo has a very strong rep with good graduate schools. there is a long history of ramapo alum going to columbia’s grad schools… their MBA is among the best in the nation, if thats what you are interested in. have you decided yet? good luck!

^ The school is definately up there for me! I got in as a Biology major and probably want to study Bioinformatics as well for fun :p. Looking either to become a pharmacist or something with economics and business, so your post really brightened up my day.

Just a quick question. What was your views on the student body? I’ve read people who wrote that the students are detached from the school and still feel like they’re in high school. I’ve read that the professors can be very pompous and not want to help their students. I’ve read there is lack of dedication towards academics. What is your view on this?

When I was a student the student body was mixed. Some definitely were apathetic but there were efforts to increase school spirit a lot by having different events. It isnt a D1 large school so the school spirit just isnt the same you’re going to find at a Rutgers or Penn State. As far as still in high school, I never felt that way, and I went to a really large high school. Mostly I remember feeling comfortable because people were mostly relaxed and unpretentious. I didn’t meet a lot of pompous people, I found most to be down to earth. I graduated a few years ago so I don’t know what its like now.

I am really surprised you read the professors are unhelpful because my experience was SO opposite that and the faculty really pride themselves on being student centered. All of my faculty were awesome and helpful and all ahve office hours and are approachable. There are NO teaching assistants at ramapo… at some schools you can barely get a word with a professor, but at ramapo they teach every class themselves. I think some of my friends in the business school had a few professors who they felt were quite egotistical, mostly because they are executives or something in their life outside of the college. However, my faculty were awesome and I think my experience is what most people have. They are supportive but challenge you to be an independent thinker and fine tune your analytical and research skills.

I hope this helps. I am still so shocked to hear what you heard about the faculty! Good luck in your decision making process!
