Rank the APs

Rank the APs (In your opinion) from easiest to hardest?

Are you talking about the courses overall or the AP exams? I will rate based on my experience with the exams: These are the only ones I have completed (3): Easiest was English AP Language and Composition, Medium but still semi-easy was AP US History, and hardest was AP Chemistry.

The teachers can make or break the class. If they pile on busywork that doesn’t teach the concepts or prepare for the exam, they are wasting everyone’s time. However, only the students at your school can provide info on that.

Some AP’s are intrinsically more time consuming than others. From my experience:

The hardest and/or most-time consuming, IMO, are: Calc BC (if taught as a one-year course after pre-calc), Physics C E&M

A small step down to the next level: Physics C Mech, Bio, Chem

A small step down to the next level: Eng Lit, Eng Lang, USH, Spanish Lit

A small step down to the next level: World Hist, Euro Hist, Art Hist, Calc AB, Calc BC (if taught as a one-year class after Calc AB)

A huge leap down to the next level: everything else

@Jakereally I’m surprised you feel that way. According to the college board, Lang is actually one of the test with the fewest amount of students getting 5s. What did you get on the exam?

Of the exams I’ve taken, I’d rank like this:

Easiest
Calc BC
Physics C EM
Physics C Mech
Chem (took before it was revised)
English Language & Composition
Comp Sci
US History
French
Music Theory
Hardest

From friends, I’ve heard that Environmental, Pysch, Stats are pretty easy whereas English Literature, Bio, and the new chem test are more challenging.

Of course, this is really subjective.

Edit: I just realized this is pretty much the exact opposite of @skieurope list. How are none of the foreign languages besides Spanish there (and music theory which I thought was impossible)!?

@AnnieBeats‌ I agree with @skieurope‌ about the teachers making or breaking the class. My AP english teacher was awesome because she prepared us so well. At one point during the year we were doing timed writes almost everyday and practicing from an AP exam practice book. She even held study sessions an hour before school started for additional practice for a few weeks. For that reason I feel like it was the easiest, because when I was taking the test everything was so familiar! College board is probably really accurate saying that its the test with the least 5’s because it can be super hard if you aren’t prepared. And I don’t know my testing scores until they are posted in July, not sure if I got a 5 but I’m 99% sure I got at least a 3 which is good enough to receive credits at the colleges I’m applying to this fall. Hoping for the best though.

Also, adding onto what @skieurope‌ said about teachers piling up work that doesn’t teach the concepts or anything about the exam, I completely agree! That’s the reason I ranked AP Chem as the most difficult for me because the whole year our teacher had us doing stuff that was NOT even on the exam. He was horrible at preparing us! During the last month before the exam he realized we were screwed and basically tried cramming a million new concepts into our brain.

This is according to my high school counselor, so take it with a grain of salt and then drown yourself in salt and then ask for more salt.
Easiest to Hardest
World History, US History, Economics (listed as equally hard), Government and Politics, Environmental Science, Calculus AB, Chemistry, Physics 1, Physics 2, English Composition, English Literature, Calculus BC.

Often, what is easiest or hardest depends on the student.

Some students will find calculus BC to be an easy A and 5, but struggle in English literature, while others will have the opposite experiences.

However, beyond student-specific differences, you can look at various college web sites to see what each AP tends to be accepted as (in terms of subject credit and placement, not credit units). A few may be accepted for a year of college courses. But many others may only be accepted for a semester of college course, and some may not be commonly accepted at all. That can give an idea of how the material covered compares to actual college courses.

@AnnieBeats‌ In 2013, AP English Lang was actually the most taken AP exam, so I’m guessing that might possibly mean something :stuck_out_tongue: For example, AP Calculus BC has about a 50% 5 rate, but usually students that take AP Calculus are more focused on their studies. I’m not saying that only stupid people take AP English Lang! But at least at my school, the prerequisites for AP English Lang are a lot easier compared to other APs.

I’m just guessing though, I really have no idea xD

This was the list for me from easiest to hardest:

APUSH
AP Language and Comp
AP Statistics
AP Psychology
AP Government
AP Environmental Science
AP Macroeconomics
AP Microeconomics
AP Chemistry

AP US History was pretty easy along with AP Psych. For me AP Lang was challenging regarding the passages and managing my time on the test. @corrcri1

From what I’ve taken. Easiest to hardest:

Macro ~(5)
US Gov ~(5)
AB ~(5)
Stats (4)
BC (5)
CS ~(5)
Eng Lang (2)
Bio ~(3)
WHAP (3)
Chem ~(3)
APUSH ~(3)
C: M ~(5)
C: E/M ~(4)

I can only speak for the tests I’ve taken. Hardest to easiest:

Macro (?)
WHAP (3)
APUSH (3)
AP Lit (?)
AP Lang (5)
AP Psych (?)

But I’m partial to the humanities and rather bad at quantitative reasoning.

Regarding some of the discussion above, I’d say the Lang MC is quite easy if you have an eye for language. Some of it is similar to the SAT’s CR. The essay section requires a lot of practice beforehand to master the time constraints, however.

AP Chem is by the hardest IMO… I feel like I understand the concepts when I learn it but my test results say otherwise.

Uhm ap lang was easish but ap cal ab was extremely hard for me. I felt like my brain was turned off during the exam though ehhh

Easiest to hardest:

US Gov
Psych
Comp Gov
Lang&comp
US History
World History
Macro
Micro
Calc BC
Chem
Physics C:Mech
Lit&comp

Based on exams
Easiest------------->Hardest
BC Calc, APUSH, , AP World (5), AP Bio, AP Comp Sci, AP Chem unrevised (5), AP Lang(5)
I’m more of a math person than an english person. Also, BC has an insane curve in which 45% of people get 5s.
For Chem, I thought some of the FRQ were tricky, but the curve on the unrevised exam was great and I could easily get a 5 with that
For lang, I probably barely got a 5… I was really surprised.
For Bio, it was pretty good, but I’m nervous for that harsh curve.
For USH, I took the make up exam this year due to exam conflicts

Based on my own ethnocentric, humanities-inclined being as well as the quality of teaching the content at my school. Of course, this list could be easily reversed for people with better trig backgrounds and who are better at rote memorization.

Easy
Psychology
US government
English Lang
Statistics
US history
Microeconomics
Macroeconomics
English Literature
World History
Calculus
Biology
Hard
