Just went in and looked at this for fun to see how every 'University of (x state)' ranked on U.S News and World Report. I understand that some states have colleges that are better than their University of xxx state, like the University of Louisiana is not as good as Louisiana State and Purdue is more highly regarded (as a whole) than IU. This is more just for fun and interest. :)

I only included the main campus for each one. Some stats like California have more than one 'main campus' so I just went ahead and put in the highest ranked one.

49....Rutgers is the state University for New Jersey. I don't think they have one called University of New Jersey.
50....does a University of Alaska or Alaska University even exist?

Are you attempting to list the state university systems by State?

University of Penn is a private school. Penn State University is the state’s university system.
New York University is a private school. SUNY is the state’s university system.

I was just kinda messing around

I assumed Penn State would be the state system for Pennsylvania.

So Purdue didn’t make the list?
BTW, I know plenty of people who insist that the University of Chicago is a state school – so frustrating!!! Glad that mistake was not made here (but UPenn and NYU definitely need to come off).

As other have said, UPenn is a private school, as is New York University, and what point is there in including UC if you don’t specify which? Also, it seems rather redundant to do this as there’s already a ranking for public universities… (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public) and only including University of X doesn’t give the full story (yes, I realize it’s just for fun, but still). So, I’ll give it a shot at improving the list based on the highest ranked public per state regardless of name:

*U of Alaska’s ranking for some reason doesn’t appear on the Top Publics List, but does on it’s page of rankings, so that’s odd.

No, it seems to me like the point of this post is not to compare the primary state school in each state. If that was the case you guys are right, there would be Penn State, SUNY schools, etc. The point of this list is to compare against one another every school that assumes the title of “University of + Respective State” or “Respective state + University”. It is a very weird group of schools to compare, yes, because some of these schools are indeed the primary public school within the boundaries of their state (Ex. UT Austin, or maybe they are even private like UPenn), and some schools with the ‘University of’ title are small and rather irrelevant (Ex. University of Louisiana). Its interesting to kind of see who sports the “University of ‘X’” name the best. But it doesn’t serve as much of a comparison outside of that, so don’t try to make more of the list than it is. haha

Theoretically you could even make a list of schools that have the word STATE in them as well. (Penn. State, Texas State, Mississippi State, etc.) But my guess is, that list would be even more abstract than this one.
