btw im a rising senior =] and this summer im doing two internships (both nationally known) plus volunteering at hospital and other things here and there

my senior schedule
ap bio, ap lit and comp, honors physics, journalism/photography, psychology, calc ab, and oral communications.

here’s the thing–i’m a minority and low income (so that gives a boost) plus i go to a school which u of m loves (they accept students from my school like crazy)

i’m also a recipient of an incentive scholarship that my school district offers (and u of m is my choice, so i’m known in their system as a scholar of that award, so that’s another boost)

the act-- tried 3 times, always in that range =/ (heres the thing, i nvr practiced for act except reading and english, and english i do pretty good but reading–my worst score!)

Lol so I read through all these “rate my chances”, and I can’t help but think, am I the only person who wasn’t involved in 500 clubs and activities in high school? The only school related activity I included was track and field and X country…

U-M will know Cass Tech well and your high school guidance counselor should have an idea of acceptance rates at U-M and whether students with 3.8 ish/27 ACT usually get it. If you haven’t practiced for the ACT you may want to try practicing for the September test and see if that helps bump the score a bit. I think you can get it but not a slam dunk.

Just being honest, I don’t think you’ll get in unless you bump your ACT to at least a 29-30. The number of applications continues to grow and even though you go to Cass Tech a downward GPA trend and a very low ACT won’t look all that outstanding.

Get your GPA ABOVE 3.9 and I think you’ll have a good chance. U of M seem to be more focus on GPA. No one on here can tell you the future, but you can apply EA and hope for the best. 27 on your ACT isn’t the deal breaker, but a lower GPA could be.

Congrats for your friend, he’s probably on athletic scholarship or if not just very lucky. I still wouldn’t guess that you get in with your stats. All I suggest is getting a higher ACT score.

You do realize that I go to Michigan right? I have a pretty good idea of the backgrounds of most common students. It’s not common to get in with a 23 ACT and even if one were to get in with that he or she would almost surely have to do the Summer Bridge program. I’m just telling you the truth, admissions is getting more and more competitive every year and you should probably raise your ACT if you want to get in.

I don’t really feel the need to make a new topic for this, so I’ll post it here.

I’m looking for some opinions on this, but do you guys think Michigan places much importance on ECs? According to the 2010-2011 data, ECs are only “considered”, not even “important”. I find this hard to believe for such a selective school. Do they really place most of the emphasis on grades, rigor, and test scores?

You will most likely get in…You are an in state applicant, just barely on the low side of their ACT range (i think its 27-30), you have a pretty strong gpa (btw, what is it “3.8ish” or 3.8 and why did it fall?), your club experiences and extracurricular are pretty strong.
If you have any hooks like sports or urm then you definitely are in, if not I still think you have a very strong shot.
