My dream school is Columbia, so it would be great if people could tell me how this looks.

It’s impossible to rate your schedule and your chances without some idea of what other AP or Honors classes you have already taken, along with your GPA and test scores. I know that my son took AP Human Geography as a sophomore. Have you already taken AP U.S. History? Have you taken high-level science classes? What level were your English classes in previous years? Again, my son took the English AP after sophomore year. I use him as a gauge, because he wasn’t given even an outside chance at any Ivy League colleges (he is a multiple legacy at Columbia, by the way), despite what seems to have been a more rigorous schedule. All selective colleges want to know that you took the “most demanding available” schedule. If you did, then it should be sufficient, provided your test scores and GPA are outstanding. They understand that some schools don’t offer many AP classes. Some of the most elite private schools offer no AP classes, on the premise that all their classes are taught at the highest, most challenging, level. Did your school offer an IB diploma? Were you only able to enroll in AP classes as a Senior? We need a lot more information before we can even hint at your chances at one of the most selective colleges in the country.

5/7 APs is obviously very rigorous. However, at times, it can come across that you are taking APs just to say that you took them rather than to actually learn. It also depends on the context of the school. Take my school for example. I’m taking only 1 AP this year and in all of hs. Seems like nothing compare to schools that have 15 APs, but in my school, we can only take APs starting junior year. AND of the 5 APs we have, you can only take a maximum of 2 per year, provided that one of them is AP Calculus (I will be doing that next year). So it really depends. Are students taking more or less? Is this your first time taking APs and you are just trying to cram them into your schedule to look good? So the above poster is right.

I would replace Human Geography with something else. Columbia (and similar schools) does not grant credit for it, so that should give some insight on how the schedule will be viewed.

@woogzmama I took AP US History already, and took honors bio, chem, physics already, so I’m dropping my science to be able to free up space to take AP Macro/Micro. Took Honors english freshman & sophomore year, AP English language Jr. yr, last AP English Lang. senior yr. My school doesn’t offer IB, but I took all -AP for all possible classes to try to get toughest classes possible. Took AP Statistics jr year as well and self studied for AP US Gov Jr. yr, sophomore year AP Comparative Gov and got a 5.

@KiarainNYC I have no English or math courses left to take at my school besides AP English & AP Calc… Took statistics and other AP English already, took French II -IV already so AP is the only thing left as well. The other ones are either required by my school’s program (such as Human Geography) or I chose to take it as my elective (Research Methods & Macro/Micro)… I am under the assumption most kids in my school take AP english, math & language senior year for sure. Most also take a science AP but I’m taking Macro/Micro.

@skieurope I wish I could… But it’s a program requirement for my school, but I may not take the actual AP test.
