Rate the dorms Berkeley students!

I mean if I live in a suite with my friend but there will be like 3-4 more other guys it should be fine. It’s not like Im only be hanging out with him or vice versa.

so unit 3 sounds like a pretty social dorm. how is the noise level? will i be able to sleep 1 AM? what about smoking? is smoking permitted in any of the dorms? do students still do it? the general opinion is that unit 3 is not attractive at all. i hope that by ‘not attractive,’ this is just a relative statement compared to the other dorms…

bump for relevance

unit 3 oldest out of all units. you can’t even smoke within 20 ft of a door and if you try to smoke in a dorm, you’ll probably end up setting the fire alarm off unless you have a power fan. there’s usually a courtyard or some sketchy place around where kids will go to smoke.

Really you shouldn’t smoke, it is not good for you. Anyways just a side note, in Bowles in Fall 2007, one of my neighbors smoked weed on a daily basis more or less and never set on any alarm, though cannabis doesn’t have the second hand smoke characteristics (and a lot less of the other horrible problems caused by tobacco smoking) so no one really minded that much.

Am I being naive when I say that I thought recreational drugs were illegal and I’m appalled about the weed? T_T.

You’ll find people who experiment once and only once and then you’ll find full-out stoners.

You’re not naive. You just have a different social mentality.

you forget ^
the social use people. (wink wink) as in only done at parties and hangouts.

they are illegal. but eh…

I’m a first year engineering student living in a foothill double.

Social atmosphere: quiet, kind of nerdy, but fun at times. there are definitely social people here, but it’s nothing compared to the units (when i really want to party, i visit my friends in unit 3)

Dorm size: Pretty reasonable, definitely larger than the units. although given the cost…

Cost: Outrageous. Next year, the proposed rate is $17,000. Subtract about $2000 for food and divide that by 9 months, and you’re looking at a price of about $1650 a month. And this is for a double. My roommate and I went apartment hunting a couple weeks ago and landed a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom for $1550 a month. We’re paying less for the entire apartment than we were each paying for our half of the foothill room.

Food: The foothill dining commons are decent. They have their good nights…and they have their awful nights. Fortunately, you can use your meal plan anywhere on campus so make sure to check the menus every day and find out who is serving the best food.

Distance to campus: Very convenient. Especially as an engineering student. I had an 8AM class in etcheverry last semester and could leave the dorm room at 8:05 and still make it on time.

Overall: It was a good experience and a nice way to ease into the college lifestyle. The cost is ridiculous but then again all of the housing here is expensive. And i’d definitely recommend living in dorms your first year. But when spring comes, I’d start apartment hunting.

What do you guys think about Clark Kerr? Is it much less social that the Units?

nah it’s pretty good/balanced the few nights i stayed there… you’re gonna be living around a lot of athletes or so my friend says. the downside to ckc is that you’re far. upside? athletes…hehe…and huge rooms.

^ I don’t really care about distance…I don’t mind walking, but how is the social atmosphere?

^trust me, once you get here, being that far from campus will be a big drag.

I heard from other threads of people saying it’s actually not that far. Oh well, I guess I will have to go see for myself on Cal Day! But seriously I don’t really mind the distance, I actually like to stay very active and walk, or I can just bring my longboard along :)

hows stern?

You won’t like to walk after having a long and bad day and just want to sleep it off, but you can’t because you have to get to CKC first, which is just far from everything. lol.

I like to walk too, but sometimes living in foothill just makes me want to scream b/c I have classes in VLSB and walking is so slow uphill (even at my max walking speed: at least 7-10 minutes). I just want to Charlie Brown scream.

stern: getting wooed by terrible freshmen voices every thursday night.

I really don’t know which dorms to pick. I still am not sure if I actually want to be in a double or triple. I am a person that likes my space. I also snore pretty badly and I don’t want to cause anybody else any discomfort.

Also, how does housing work with financial aid? Is what is estimated as costs the base/cheapest price for housing and if I wanted a single or to be in Clark Kerr it would cost me extra?

your chances of a single are unlikely to none. sorry to say.

if you like your space, i’d definitely go with a double.
