Rate the October ACT

Yeah, it could be really disappointing (e.g. Getting a 34.25, etc.). Just hope the curve is generous enough so that these scores don’t suffer too much =P

I honestly think that -2 = 35…it wasn’t a particularly easy (or hard) reading test, and reading tends to be pretty generous.

Vince I disagree, reading test are known for having the harshest curves, I thought it was Science until I got a 31 on the Sept test and guessed on at least 6 and randomly filled in the last 4 due to time :)

science was brutal for me! i use the “answer the questions first, dont read the prompt strategy.” it turned out that lots of the questions were referring to the prompt! most of the science practice test that i have taken dont really use the prompts for reference and ive gotten 28 or higher on them. this time was different. argh!! i hope the curve will be generous. everyone thought the science section was brutal at the test center…

Ya the “don’t read the prompt” in this test could really only apply to 1 or 2 and even those you need to a read atleast one line…personally I don’t like that method

I don’t either. I always skim the prompt to get an idea of what the experiments are doing and then I answer the questions

Maybe that was my science problem.

But to jkaplan, yes. I did take the September 12th. I thouhgt I had a 32-34.
Well, I came back with a 28. So that one was harder than I thought I guess. But, I guessed on the last 3 this time. I never run out of time on the science section!!!

Well, I took the June ACT, so compared to the June ACT:

English: Relatively Easier. Only 2 or 3 really tricky ones.

Math: Easier.

Reading: Killed me. I couldn’t concentrate on any of the four passages.

Science: MUCH harder. Although the Differing Viewpoints passage was easier.

I took the June ACT, and compared to it:

English: Easier

Math: About the same, possibly a little easier

Reading: Definitely harder, but that’s because June’s was the easiest I have ever seen

Science: Much much easier

English - A little harder than before, just slightly…I thought there were a few weird questions, like the tone of the landfill one.
Math - Easy. Cake. I was really excited. The only one I think I missed was the one about the line that bisected another line and how far away it was from AF.
Reading - Same as ever. I think it’s easy for anyone who has ever had to take an AP Lit exam.
Science - Same. Maybe I’m just saying that because I knew my AP Chem about organic molecules. I did think the part about absorption was hard.

I have a question regarding a prevalent rumor circulating at my school. Some people have been saying that since the October ACT is when sooooo many seniors show up for their last shot at the ACT, including those with less than stellar abilities, the curve will be mitigated? Could that be so? I do not mean this to sound bad, but I know for sure that a lot of dumb people from my high school were there on Saturday. I, personally, would be ecstatic if there were some basis to these rumors! hahaha

You know what, I think people are just taking stabs in the dark when they try to guess the curve.
You could also argue that some people with “stellar abilities” showed up to take the test before the ED deadline…one last hurrah.

English - Pretty easy
Math - Little hard for some reason
Reading - Very rushed! First time that’s happened I usually do well on reading. This time I skipped the first passage (prose fiction) and did the others first, which I think was a mistake, considering almost everyone thought the prose fiction passage for this test was easy :frowning:
Science - Beginning was weird for me

I sure as hell hope there’s a lot of C answers this time… Because for the ones I didn’t get, I marked C’s Dx

English- Pretty easy, and I finished on time! Thought it was weird that there were so many “which answer is the LEAST acceptable” kind of questions, though.
Math- ■■■ ._. I hate Math. It’s always the second half of the test that messes me up so miserably.
Reading- Took the test last month, and some people used the method of starting the last passage first, so I tried doing it this time. Horrible choice… Well that’s another fail on the Reading Dx
Science- Mediocre. Some questions DID require background knowledge, but a lot of them were right there on the tables and graphs.

Overall, Math and Reading was probably hardest for me.

First time taking
Impressions:

English: relatively easy, couple of problems with arguable answers
Math: easy
Reading: a lot of time pressure! i was worried throughout, and some specific questions
Science: was ok, requires a bit of previous knowledge (had no idea about the geology one) and analysis

Overall: Easier than SAT, did not get as tired as after SAT, Math and English easy, Reading most challenging because of time pressure, Science also time pressured but easier

Mizz i think your my twin…

I totally agree with your kzhi2u. It was my first time taking it and once I got through the English and Math, I thought it was so much easier than the SAT and though the sections were longer, I didn’t feel as stressed by the end. The reading’s time crunch was challenging, but the questions seemed simpler and more straight-forward than SAT (plus no vocabulary!), and the science got pretty hard to the end with the amount of time left. I hated how the last 5 questions had their own whole section while all the others seemed to have many more questions.

^ With the ACT science section the passages have 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, and 7 questions to each passage (in any order) as far as I remember.

^Yeah, come to think of it, others did have just as many questions. I think it was just that I was running out of time and hoping the section I was working on would finish it off, instead of having to understand a whole new bunch of graphs and tables and analyze them for 5 questions in 2 minutes. >.>

essentially the science section is reading the question and then going to the corresponding graph, table, or whatnot asked about in the question
you don’t even have to fully understand the whole thing to be able to answer most of the questions
which has me wondering what they are testing for in the ACT science haha
