Um, so ya, I would love to go to JHU...do I even have a shot or should I get my application ready for transferring sophomore year?

solsek, I think your class rank and GPA are really holding you back. With such a good set of test scores, your rank will raise some eyebrows. Do you attend a super-competitive high school? Also, your EC's could be better. Still, you have a good shot. Good luck.

I went in on test day without studying (bad idea...I know!) so I knew there was no way I could do well on the World History test I had signed up for... I ended up taking lit because I felt like my English teacher had probably covered the basics and beyond.

Well, funny thing about my high school...this year, the class of 2007 is EXTREMELY competitive...the school (school as in the graduating class' before us) itself is rather weak. The reason why my GPA is low is because the teachers at my school don't expect students to take more than 2 AP's...so they give ridiculous amounts of homework every night (which I did not expect prior to signing up for 4 junior year lol). So I decided to stick with it and try my best...my junior grades are pretty crapp...2.9 I believe overall. 3.44 , 100/461 with all 3 years and 1 trimester. With that GPA is my rank too high or too low? If you stuck my GPA in last years class, I would be in the top 10% of the graduating class UW...yes sad. But this year our class is, like I said, extremely competitive.

Also my junior grades really did cause my GPA to drop from a 3.8 to a 3.44, I was really sick for several weeks TWICE during the year. I missed about 2 months of school because of just these 2 illnesses (flu), which cause my 2nd trimester and 3rd trimester grades to drop. My senior mid-year report so far is a 3.8, and with 2nd trimester coming I will get a 4.0 in 5 AP classes...so hopefully that will show that I can handle the rigor of JHU.

And by the way, what is your definition of a "good shot"? A maybe? slight reach? reach? match? high match? haha thanks by the way for the input.

I don't know if your counselor explained your situation or not, but it is to your great advantage to let the admissions committee know what you just told me. There will be a large number of applicants who took 8+ AP's and did fine, so if left unexplained, your junior grades could significantly hurt your chances. If your situation is properly explained, I think you have around a 50-50 shot at getting in. It will probably come down to your essays.
