RD Decisions

Another day with no news. Getting tired of this.

Ugh, ConfusedMom - I’m really sorry. Same with my son and Tulane (and my husband and I are alums). I think he’s the last kid to hear. :-(

ETA: my son was accepted at his first choice school so we’re pretty thrilled. Interestingly, it’s about the same price-wise for us as UMass.

Well, I am starting to wonder, if they don’t let him in engineering and just keep him Undeclared, will we even hear? His Spire won’t change (it all ready says he is Undeclared). We will only know if they send out another packet in the mail.

BTMell-I forget, which school is your son’s 1st choice?

Maybe contact the Dean’s Office at the College of Engineering…at least it woud be a different avenue of communication.

You could explain the situation and your concern that perhaps his admissions appeal is not even being evaluated? Did you file a formal appeal or was it just a conversation with an Admissions Officer? I would have the concern that his case is not even being reviewed by anyone because upon cursory examination it would appear that he is already admitted.

Email mail@admissions.umass.edu and say this: you were accepted undeclared, but have decided that engineering is right for you, that you would like to attend the engineering open house, that your son is interested in the engineering open house, and that these would not be available to you as undeclared. Worked for me.

Hi ConfusedMom - Bates! He was deferred from ED and we didn’t really think he’d have a chance so we’re thrilled.

@BTMell > Wow…Bates. Congratulations!

Wow! Congrats on Bates!!!

BTMell-Congrats on Bates! How exciting!

ctcpountess-wow! That’s all you did to get in? May just have to try that. He has talked to an admissions rep and she said that his new stats were received by the school and that he would be put into the RD pool. On the Umass website I found this paragraph on a page of FAQs:

I was not admitted to my first-choice major. Can I be reconsidered?
The academic record and credentials we reviewed did not meet the criteria for your preferred major. You may request re-evaluation if you have new / higher test scores and/or grades and believe these may qualify you for admission to your preferred major by sending an email to changes@admissions.umass.edu.

So the next day after he talked to her we sent an email to this address back on Feb 8th, but still nothing!

Ok, done deal. Just checked my son’s email and the UMass rep emailed him and said that he was re-evaluated and the decision still stands: Undeclared. UConn, here we come! Go Huskies!

Congratulations that you can finally move forward and make that decision. Quite a relief isn’t it? Especially since your son wanted to go to UConn anyways. It would have been difficult to have to turn way from what he wanted.

Yeah, the only reason he was considering Umass was financial and of course, he has friends from our town going there. Now we can move on.

Congratulations, ConfusedMom! I’m really glad you can move on. I know UConn was his first choice so all’s well.

We are so happy for Bates for our son. Always at the back of my mind is how big UMass is. My son is deaf - he listens and speaks thanks to bilateral cochlear implants - and the thought of him being in a class with 400 people really made me nervous. I will say that UMass seems to offer great accommodations and the folks I spoke with were wonderful in the disabilities office. It might have been different had he been accepted into the honors college. His grades are very good and his test scores decent but not quite there.

For us, Bates is only about $2K more a year and given that there are virtually no loans, it’s pretty hard to pass up. And it’s looking like he’ll be on the golf team as well which he’ll love.

I have to say I’ve enjoyed getting to know everyone on this particular group. So very supportive! I can’t wait to hear where everyone ends up.

BTmell-that is so great about Bates! What a great small school for your son! So nice up there in Maine. And the financial situation can’t be beat!! Well done.

Maine does have some treasures…shhh, don’t tell everyone.

Thanks, you g uys - it felt like a perfect match the two times we visited. My son loves the outdoors - he’s always been that way. The fact that Lewiston is close to the mountains and to the ocean is really nice as well. Of course lewiston isn’t Amherst which I think is the best college town ever. And of course, since my older son attends college in Amherst, I secretly hoped… things work out.

USNChief-We’ll keep it our little secret!

My son is already looking for a new mountain bike for this fall. Loves all the trails that are around the UMaine campus.

Oops…isn’t this supposed to be a UMass - Amherst thread…lol. We gave up our spot…hope it helps someone out.

Oops - you’re right! I saw your son was waitlisted from NEU. My son was rejected but all’s well.

Yes…but that was no big loss for my son. He turned down the waitlist offer before i even new he was offered it. He thought that he wanted NEU until he visited there. Did not like that it was so urban and lacked separation from the surrounding city. He wanted a more traditional campus with the green spaces and large center quad.
