RD Notification Date

I was wondering if anybody knows when we will be finding out our regular decisions. I used to think all schools were april first, but it turns out a lot of schools start telling you in early march.

UVA stays strictly by the rules and I believe it is April 1st this year. What you may be referring to is the send out of many "likely letters" to good students who will "likely be admitted" to universities.
Likely letters started in the Ivy League. The Ivy League has an agreement that all Ivy League schools will notify students of acceptance on April 1, (except for some colleges within Cornell University that are linked with New York state educational agreement). It's a competition thing between the Ivy's. However, years ago, they figured out that if there is a particularly good student that they'd compete with, with other schools, they'd send them a "likely letter" saying something like " you are so good, you are likely to be accepted to our school". This caught on at other schools so, yes, April 1 is the official date , but don't be surprised if you have nice little nibbles from the schools you have applied to. Any positive communications should be taken in a VERY positive way, but not a guarantee until April 1.
Best of luck!

I'm still trying to understand the likely letter process. If a school sends likely letters to its top applicants, wouldn't logic prevail and say that 100% of those kids will be admitted pending something like getting arrested? If a school takes so much interest as to send out a letter to them, why would they suddenly change their minds about the decision?

For instance, a school has a 30% acceptance rate. This school sends out likely letters to 5% of their applicants. If there are 100 applicants, I would assume that applicants 1-5 would be apart of the 30 students. I simply cannot see applicants 1-5 dropping to #31 or below. Can anyone help me understand this concept better?

Jask, we're just finishing the first round of review, which means within the next few days, each application file will have been read at least twice. There is another phase of double checking to get through before decisions are final. Things can change during that round as we look at the big picture. Are we close to our target number of offers? Were we too conservative with a particular school? Does our in state/out of state ratio look right?

As for notification, we don't want to hold onto the decisions. We want to get them out the door. The fact is that the second phase of our review takes a few weeks and then the dean has the finalize everything. From there, the administrative staff has to print, check, and stuff letters and packages for over 18,000 people. Printing that number of letters takes a very long time, even with the four massive, super efficient printers we have (you can see the back of one in the photo here.

We don't know our mail date until we get the decisions finalized.

lol@ the parent asking when DOTL 2K8 would be.

2 weeks left now people!

Trust me, the admission office will pretty much be set with their decisions this week. The last week or so will be spent on sending out letter and finalizing "last-minute" decisions.

Thanks for the update, aceit. Maybe I'll just step out.

;)

You've been busted aceit!!
Dean J, you make me laugh out loud, AGAIN!! Thanks as always for your input. I love your dog!

Haha Dean J, I love it.

Maybe you should, Dean J. You're not the only person running the admission office you know ;)

aceit~ it's a good thing all these call names aren't real, or it would hurt your application! ;) but maybe you're already in? whatever, you do have an edge to your comments.

With the amount of time I spend answering questions on the blog and on this message board, we'd be in trouble if I was supposed to be "running" the Office of Admission.

Dean J~ altho my UVA d is a new grad, i still like being a part of this forum. i always admire your ability to remain calm and take the higher road. and i am also always a bit taken aback by rudeness and arrogance.... i guess EVEN UVA has its share! ;)

learmestuff, you are a hoot!!

Dean J, you are the best, and always do take the high road. You reflect well the overwhelming spirit of UVA. Of course there are the few stragglers......ugh.........

But you are always above, Dean J!
Thank you!

Exalt Dean J further, powderpuff tool!

With all due respect, derogatory personal comments about dedicated posters who do their best to help readers of this CC Forum serve no useful purpose, and should be avoided IMHO.

Divergent points of view are desirable; inflammatory personal attacks are unwarranted and unwelcome however. Such criticisms are certainly NOT in the best tradition of the Ladies and Gentlemen who are privileged to attend the University.

Simply put, let's knock off the trash talk and get back to the original subject.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Dean J that can not be re-paid and that debt has nothing to do with admissions. She went above and beyond to provide help, assistance and suggestions when her duties as an admissions officer were no longer in play. I, for one, give thanks where thanks are due and in the case of Dean J, they are certainly due and owing from me.
