Bubble for sure with at 29 and 3.7. EA would help. You don’t need to do ED or SCEA.

Make sure you show interest… Tulane is VERY good at yield protection from what I’ve heard

Sounds good! They tend to shy away from ACT 36s. And show a lot of interest. Talk to the admissions counselor, go visit, call them etc. and write a strong essay!

@gogogogobruins
Why do they “tend to shy away from ACT 36s.”?
Any evidence of that?

Typically, those with a 35/36 ACT are using Tulane only as a back up to Ivy’s.

@tj1711
I expected that reply, of course, but …

  1. Do you have actual evidence of this? It seems … strange … that an ACT36 would be rejected for example.
  2. Just because a student applies to Ivies AND Tulane, doesn’t mean they attend the Ivy even if accepted to both. Do you see why?

Of course, my S18 is interested in Tulane for various reasons, and has a C36 ACT score. Not trying to argue, just trying to separate anecdote and perception from fact and figure out what specific actions we would take about it.

Congratulations to your son, I would suggest he apply early and show a lot of demonstrated interest. My daughter was also a high stat student (not quite a 36), and got deferred in early action and then showed a lot of interest and visits to show commitment. She has been very happy this year at Tulane!

@DavidPuddy seems like that was the consensus this year based on all the people posting on this site. High ACT is not an automatic rejection but if you don’t show interest, high score can be a detriment. So I should rephrase and say “show a lot of interest. High test scores mean nothing if you don’t show interest.”

It’s been a trend the past few years. There are always high stat kids posting here who are shocked they don’t get in and admit they only applied because it was free/it was a safety…

@DavidPuddy My S17 also scored a 36 ACT. He was genuinely interested in Tulane and luckily that interest came through. He was accepted EA (applied in early October) and will be attending this fall. I agree with earlier comments that visiting, writing a strong Why Tulane essay, applying early and showing a genuine interest will help for high stats kids.

@chicagomama2 Thanks so much for the feedback. Did your S get rewarded with any of the more competitive scholarships like DHS or Paul Tulane?

@DavidPuddy He only applied for the Paul Tulane and unfortunately didn’t get it. He was planning to apply for theDHS but ran out of time. Definitely have you son plan ahead and apply to both. We are very grateful for the 32K a year but obviously full tuition would have been better! Good luck to your son!

Thanks!
