(Re)starting a club?

Hi everyone! So I’ve been a tutor for the tutoring club (HYPE - Help You Pass Everything xD) at our school since the middle of 10th grade, when the club has started, up until now, as a rising senior.

However, the club never really took off; this was largely to the disproportionate ratio of tutors to students who came in. The most popular parts of the club were the one-time seminars (college essay writing, making ice cream, extracting DNA out of strawberries), but the actual tutoring, which was supposed to be conducted either before school or during lunch (each tutor had a shift) was rarely attended.

During interning at my local newspaper, I was inspired and decided that I wanted to revitalize the club for this incoming year by broadening our scope and helping teach local kids by hosting seminars at the library (AP classes, SAT/ACT, college apps, maybe some sort of science experiment-y thing at our school? A science fair, maybe?).

However, this is where things get a bit tricky. All the officers of the club were seniors, and graduated this past year, so if I wanted to revitalize the club, I would pretty much have to step in as President - but that isn’t the main problem. The adviser of the club is a teacher I know well, but there is one problem: She’s rumored to have retired after the past year.

I believe that HYPE could be successful, if it incorporates more officers/tutors who are NOT rising seniors and caters to a wider audience (the city community).

I have the vision, but I am completely confused as to where to start.

For anyone who’s started a club, how did you start? First of all, did you find officers first or find an adviser to help you with picking the officers first? Also, do you have any ideas how to make lessons/tutoring more appealing to either a) the students at school or b) the community in a city?

Thank you to everyone who’s responded!

Hello! What a great idea for your school community! I am in the same situation currently (newspaper re-boot) but what I am thinking about doing, and take this if it seems helpful, but I would totally try to gather up some friends, inform the school (posters, announcements, maybe post something on social media) get granted permission by guidance or a teacher. I would talk to the teacher who was part of it before to clarify and get specifics, she can probably re-direct you, and tell you what to do in regards to the protection or teacher head of HYPE. As far as tutoring, if someone wants help, they are gonna go for it. Most tutoring costs money, so that worry and concern is out of the way for families and kids. I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck. If you have anymore specific questions, feel free to PM me!

thanks!! i’ll definitely try everything you’ve suggested.

any other opinions?
