Reach and Targets

Hey, I wanted to know what people think my chances are for admission to certain colleges, with my stats.

High school unweighted GPA: 3.4-3.6
The low gpa is due to being a poor student my freshman year - I got 3 Cs in Honors Biology, Geometry and French
My sophomore year I figured it out and got all As except for 2 Bs
Junior year I only got one B in Precalc. All others were As

AP - US History, Lang, Gov, Euro, Latin, Literature

SAT: 2150

SAT II: Not taken yet but expecting good scores in US History and Latin

ECs:

Marching Band - Vice President and Trumpet Section Leader
Jazz Band - Lead trumpet
Pit Orchestra - Lead trumpet
Region Band - 4th Chair trumpet
Boy Scouts with various leadership positions
I also worked at a large Boy Scout camp for three summers as a Nature and Science instructor. Two summers as a volunteer and one paid

What do my chances look like for:

American University
UMass
NYU
UMichigan
UMaryland
Amherst College
Kenyon College
Oberlin
Dartmouth
University of Delaware
George Washington University
Boston University
Georgetown

Can I get into any of those that aren't traditional safety schools? Esp. Oberlin, GW etc.
And how about reach schools like Gtown and Dartmouth?

Get community service hours, write good essays, and keep up the upward trend. Also consider attaching clip of a solo performance if you are really good. Anything helps.

GPA too low for UMich. How does your GPA look if without freshmen grades?

American University - yes
UMass - yes
NYU - yes
UMichigan - yes
UMaryland - yes
Amherst College - yes
Kenyon College - yes
Oberlin - yes
Dartmouth - no
University of Delaware - yes
George Washington University - yes
Boston University - yes
Georgetown - no

without freshman year somewhere between 3.8-3.9

Are you applying for financial aid? Many of those schools are need-aware or need-sensitive, so this should also be a consideration in your choices.

bump

Okay, you have a good list of schools with some that you’ll get into, and some that’ll be tougher. Instead of chancing you (if you don’t mind), I thought I’d provide some advice. I might add Davidson College to your list, it seems right in line with the schools that you’re looking at.

Take the SAT again for a higher score. Spend some time working on it over the summer, or from now until June. You’ll be much more competitive if you get a 2200+, or better yet a 2250+. I don’t know about your breakdown, but just work on getting that superscore up.

For an applicant like you, who has improved throughout high school, you need to be very careful with how your recommendations are written. Make sure your counselor really addresses this in your letter, and also choose teachers who’ve seen you struggle and grow as a person. Don’t choose a teacher where you made the best grade, but choose one that taught a class that you were fundamentally interested in, whose class you participated well in.

At this point “the hay is in the barn” – there’s not that much you can do to change activities and grades. Work on those test scores, and finishing your junior year off well. All As first semester senior year would look great (I wouldn’t recommend applying to a top choice ED as you’ll look better once they get your midyear in January). Focus on your application essay too – don’t write an essay about your accomplishments and what you’ve done, but focus specifically on how you think, and how it makes you unique. I think it’s called a “slice of life” essay, is intended to show who you are, not what you’ve done (Seriously, these essays are way better, and most high school kids don’t write these.)

Feel free to message me with questions – hope this was helpful.

If you uwGPA without freshmen year is 3.8-3.9, then you are not as hopeless for UMich. Just bring up your SAT and give UMich a try.
