For me, Monster mostly has a placebo effect. Red Bull works after the second can, but that's too expensive. Recently, just the adrenaline of knowing that track practices and extra runs keep me behind and I HAVE to finish assignments have kept me going. However, when I need that super boost, I now find myself turning to black coffee.

I used black coffee during my AP runs in HS and all nighters at my internship this past summer, but not in college, thus far. The only thing is my body reactions to the coffee when I drink it. I find my body slightly quivering (slight rolling of the shoulders and a seemingly controllable head movement) after each medium sized sip-gulp.

It works, but I'm just wondering how others respond to Black.

One drink I've successfully used in the past to get through finals and final projects was introduced to me by a coworker. It's used by a lot of computer gamers--Bawls (pack of 24 10-oz bottles for $32--www.bawls.com). It's not particularly cheap, but one bottle will get you through an entire night pretty easily...actually, one might be enough to easily get you through a couple of nights, depending on your weight, etc....
Supposedly, despite the caffeine, it does not give you the "jitters" that caffeine does.

On the other hand, it should be remembered that if you're studying for a test while on caffeine, you will want to make sure you take the test in the same state (on caffeine)!

That is TOTALLY true. I remember before taking my AP Calc BC exam I was so wired on caffeine...and then it wore off right before the free response section and I began feeling lethargic. Luckily I owned the MCQ, but you're totally right.

That is sometimes because the energy drink might have increased your blood pressure. So, please watch out for that. Even folks in our age group can have mini strokes and the like. I am not trying to scare you, btw (^_^)

Red Bull doesn't do anything for me. Atleast anything noticable. Ive tried Monster and Sobe aswell, and I think Monster had the best effect without a crash, but Sobe tasted the best and kept me going till about 3am. But the best combo I think is food and energy drinks, and soda for a bit too. The combo keeps you from completly dying.

Why do people act as if black coffee is much more potent than coffee w/sugar and creme? 1 teensie creamer and 2 splendas isn't going to markedly negate the caffeine content. we creamer kids get the shakes too. :)

true, that. tea works well for me. anyone try cocaine? (the energy drink). they don't lie about that stuff. the energy is instantaneous (sp?) too bad it tastes repulsive and makes your chest and throat burn.
