for the plazas, there are one or two private triples on each floor. its usually one of the end rooms, and theyre HUUUGE. those rooms have their own private bathroom.

that could a downside though since the shower, sink, and toilet are all in one room. you cant have someone showering while someone's on the john or brushing their teeth....unless you're all cool with that. o___o

so i finally got to see one of the triples in the res halls in person, and my reaction is.. WOW.. it seems like a prison cell! (no offense to those who live there) it's very cramped and small. :/ is there any room to do anything really? they stuff the desks under the beds! lol. are the doubles in the res halls any different? are they the same size just with 2 beds instead of three? TIA

I think I might need to post a picture of my room to show what you guys can do with it. Truthfully, it is small, and we feel it when I'm on the floor studying and my roommates have to step over me, but there is a study lounge, and Powell/YRL/etc. Or when someone's sitting in front of the TV playing video games; it's pretty hard to maneuver around them. You do manage, you just have to remain on friendly terms with everyone so nobody's too irritable and pick fights over little things.

I think the worse thing about have two other roommates has to be the sleep issue. There's always someone asleep in the room at any given time, no lie. So you'll need to hone your ninja skills, something one of my roommates hasn't realized...you know that one video where some guy buttered the floor tiles to teach his roommate a lesson because his roommate slams the door every morning? It's kinda on that scale. I mean, who needs five different alarms every morning...and sleeps through all of them?! At max volume?!?! Srsly.

But yes, there is enough storage space for everything, and no, you don't feel like you're in prison. It's gotten to the point that, when I go sleep at home, I feel like there's too much space in my room and I don't quite know what to do with it. I guess it depends on how space-savvy, adaptable, and diplomatic you are.

i'm confused. we just went to the housing tour and they showed us a triple room in a plaza. It had a private bath for the 3 roomates. I thought that ALL HALLS had shared bath (communal bathrom with multiple shower stalls, sinks and toilets), and ALL PLAZAS had "private" baths (where you share with just your roommates). Do plazas have a choice of communal/floor baths, or are they all private? The guide could only show us his room.

I have a quick question regarding the housing payment:
I know that we can pay the amount for deposit using our credit card. I'm international, and my card is VISA, will that work out? I don't want to be shocked around the deadline knowing that my card won't work out and risk not having a place to live.
What other payment options are there? At least to reserve a housing space?

In the plazas with a double/shared bath (4-6 per room, all sharing 1 bathroom), is there any divider/door between the toilet or shower? From the floor plan, it doesn't look like any. I'm trying to figure out how all 6 people can access the bathroom if one person is a bathroom hog. also, are the shared bathrooms cleaned DAILU (like communal ones in Halls), or weekly (like private baths)? thanks sooo much!

kkahuna, the shower stall is a separate small, closet-sized space room with a door. the same goes for the toilet "room", it has a door as well. you will have a door to go into the bathroom and use the sink without disturbing the privacy of those showering or using the toilet.

you can refer to the floorplan if that description sounds confusing or you can go on a housing tour and see for yourself. :)

You have a very good chance at getting a plaza, triple, with a private bath.
I had one my first year at UCLA. And I know a lot of freshies who have it this year too.

honestly, with one of the halls closed for the next gazillion years, there's a high chance you'll get a plaza if you want one. as for private bath, those are typically only found in de neve and parts of sunset (most plazas have shared bath).

i do NOT like private bath. in a shared bath, everything is separate like mnucla said. this means, if someone loves 2 hour showers, you can still go pee or brush your teeth. if someone takes 20 minutes to apply makeup, you can use the other sink to wash up. but in a private bath, it's like being at home and only having one bathroom. sure, it can work out peachy, but what are the chances when you've got three girls? especially if you all happen to start your days at the same time. not pretty.

Thanks both of you for the info. I have triple shared bath as my second choice right now, however I might decide to change it before the deadline.

How was your experience in the plazas? With roommates?

And how bad is the "freshman 15", really? For you / people you know?

Freshman 15? Haha. Provided that you eat right, exercise a moderate amount, things like that, it'll won't happen to you. Make friends and go to Wooden. Run around the track. Walk down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. I lost five pounds. Don't know how that happened. I don't even exercise but I do eat healthier here than at home (6 pieces of fruit daily/2 bowls of salad/grilled chicken/one heaping spoonful of pasta).

For others, it might be a different story. I find finding friends to work out with a good way to stay healthy and to monitor your weight.

The plaza situation that I had with my roommates was good. I had problems with only one roommate some of the time. Other minor things that irritated me for one day did no really irk me the rest of the year. Housing did a good match up for me, I had very clean roommates, quiet and we were respectful of each other's surroundings. We all got along. Sometimes the smell of my roommate's hair as she straightened every morning sort of made me lost my appetite but living in a plaza last year was IMO, so much better than living in a hall this year. For a good deal of reasons.

So, I take it the bathroom situation should be the #1 deciding factor in choosing your room. My son truly thinks he'd go crazy in those tiny rooms in the halls, but since he is extremely social and sports competitive, should this be the choice for him to meet like students? Any suggestions?

to karagon7:
Each floor's EVP, External Vice President (or IVP) makes up a roster sheet for sign ups each quarter for Intramural Sports such as Water Polo, 3 v. 3 Basketball, Tennis, Soccer...co-ed/men's/womens's. Plazas can be just as social and sports competitive. I lived in a plaza last year and my floor had a great time playing Intramural Sports in a floor team and making friends that way. I highly suggest your son to be involved in floor government or to participate in their activities in order to meet people if he lives in a plaza or wants to participate in IM sports (you get an awesome t-shirt if you win!).
