So I'm still trying to decide whether I should apply here or not.

Can anyone chance me? I don't think I have any chance but people around me tell me to try at least. So I was wondering if it's even worth applying? I don't want to post up my stats as they can be pretty specific and some people I know might be here.. pm me or reply and I will send you my stats right away!

Thanks!

You definitely should try if you have interest in Cornell! Not all of us are perfect applicants (my GPA is seriously less than perfect (not even like "OMG I have a 3.9 is this good enough?" it's loooower) compared to most of the other prospective Cornellians, for example) and admissions decisions can surprise even the most certain students.
I'm no expert, but if it would make you feel better, you can send me some of your stats and I can give you what I'd surmise your chances to be :).

Definitely apply. Most people on this site who post chance threads are like, "OMG I have a 3.99 UW and 2390 with 14 AP's and STELLAR reccs at the #1 private Prep HS in the universe...DO I EVEN HAVE A SHOT???!"

In my HS, they gave out a packet with college admissions stats from the past 3 yrs. At least 10% of the senior class applies to Cornell per yr, and more than half get accepted. I noticed some students got in with GPA's from 3.2-3.5! So yeah, apply. PM me if you like.

honestly, do not let people on a forum crowded with overachievers sway your decision to not apply to Cornell.

if it is your dream, apply, this applies to everyone reading this.

if you have a 1.0 gpa and a 500 SAT and Cornell is still your dream school: APPLY! As long as the financial factor of applying isn't a concern for you.

If you don't apply to a school you have a 0% chance of getting in.
If you do apply to a school you at least have a >0% chance of getting in.

If it means that much to you, do it. Regardless of what anyone else tells you, regardless of whether you feel you will not get in.

You may be angry and sad if you do get a rejectance letter, but at least you know you tried. Bitterness and Anger consumes the applicant who goes to a school that isn't their dream because they fated themselves to not applying to where they wanted to.

[/end impassioned plea]

that was deep chendrix :P

I really do think that this topic is important. Don't look at all the others here on these forums. Maybe YOU have got the special something that Cornell is looking for. My teacher just told me a story about a girl who had below average academics, but excelled in horseback riding. The Cornell staff was so impressed that they accepted her. Theme of life: You can never win if you never try!!

well...don't try to raise the false hope that you can be below average (which implies stupid) and get into Cornell because you're good at a hobby. That girl was probably an Animal science major and conveyed her passion for animals through her horseback riding or something, I don't know.

OP - this is in response to your PM. Yes, you do have below-avg grades by Cornell standards, but you should still apply, because you have a shot. Your math grades are really high - 800 on Math SAT II is not easy, and you're applying to CALS. You can explain the problems you had in 10th grade in the Additional Info section. Don't go into too much detail and blame it all on your "problem" but do mention it because it could explain why you didn't do well that yr.

If Cornell is your first choice, I would also do ED...unless there's financial problems.

below average for what, stargazerlilies?

below average for Harvard? for MIT? for Cornell? for the US? for NYS? for the world?

which of these do you say implies stupid?

You try to rationalize that this somehow "stupid" girl got into Cornell because she MUST have been an Animal Science major.

No one is trying to raise false hope, but no one is trying to make obviously flawed generalizations that people with below average grades can't get into Cornell.
