For an Engineering Major incoming this fall:

Is the Reading and Comprehension Requirement the same as the Entry Level Writting Requirement? OR is one the first part of the other? I'm confused here.

I don't fullfil the requirement to be exempt from any, but are they both satisfied by Analytical Writing Placement examination?

Most importantly perhaps, since I am not an instate I understand that I will be automatically taking the Analytical Writing Placement examination but if I take it on September I assume I obviosly wait for spring to take either 1st part or 2nd part of the requirement. So I take (according to suggested class schedule) Humanities elective in fall, switching them, but do humanities classes need this requirement as a pre-requisite to enroll?

I live overseas and English is my second language but since elementary I went to a biligual school so I speak and write english fluently. As a junior I did AP English and after that class I really felt a great domain over my english and felt ready for college in this sense. Despite of this I didn't pass the test even though there were some outside factors that might have affected my performace. Do you think, as long I as I pass the examination, that I should skip the College Writing RN1A (1st part of requirement)?

Which courses will fullfil the second part of the requirement and also the Academic Culture Requirement? Two birds in one stone (just noticed how cruel and violent this analogy is!)

Thank you very much in advance for your time on addressing my numerated concerns. :)

Unless you have a high enough score on the SAT or some other tests, you have to take AWPE to determine if you need the Entry Level Writing english course.

That is distinct from the reading and comprehension requirements.

Entry Level Writing is a requirement at every UC campus. R&C is an additional Berkeley requirement imposed by several of the colleges here. R&C consists of two courses, A and B, that must be taken in your first two years (new policy, previously could happen anytime in four years).

The results of the AWPE don’t come in early enough to allow you to register for Fall, thus you may need to register without knowing for sure. Advise during CalSO will clear that up.

There is a sequence of three courses - Entry Level Writing, R&C A, and R&C B - that you will have to take, but there are various ways to be waived from attending one or more. Pass AWPE and you waive Entry Level Writing. AP english scores may waive up to all three depending on the exam and score.

I am not going to CalSO since I live overseas. Can I not register for Entry Level Writting and take the test in order to see if the test puts me in R&C B, is this possible?

You can register for Entry Level Writing, then take the AWPE in your first weeks on Campus in fall. If you pass, then you can drop Entry Level Writing.

Note that Entry Level Writing is not the same as R&C A. There are three separate courses required.

Entry Level Writing is required at all UC campuses unless you get a waiver through the AWPE test or other scores (e.g. AP, SAT). That is a pre-req for the R&C courses, has to be taken first.

Next is R&C A, which in turn is the prereq for R&C B. Certain AP or standardized test scores can waive the need to take R&C A or even R&C B, but these are all tests you will have taken BEFORE coming to Cal. Once you arrive on Campus, unless you have previously waived those classes, you will be required to take R&C A then B.

No matter how well you do on the AWPE test, either this summer or upon coming to Cal (for internationals like you), it has no impact on the R&C A and B requirements. All it does is determine if you need to take Entry Level Writing first.

AWPE does not waive R&C A requirement for anyone. All that AWPE does is waive the need for the Entry Level Writing class.

To waive the Entry Level Writing course, either pass the AWPE or have one of these already:

A minimum score of 680 on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing Section

A minimum score of 680 on the SAT II: Subject Test in Writing

A minimum score of 30 on the ACT combined English/Writing Test

A minimum score of 3 on the Advanced Placement Test in English Composition and Literature or in English Language and Composition

A minimum score of 5 on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English (Language A only)

A minimum score of 6 on the International Baccalaureate Standard Level English and Exam

A minimum grade of C in a transferable college-level English composition course completed at an accredited college or university and accepted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Berkeley.

Rider I am very sorry that I didn’t throughly read your first post as I was in a rush before but you had clearly answered my question. Thank you for breaking it down.

I don’t fulfill any of the requirements.

So you suggest I enroll in College Writting this fall (NRA, R1A What is the difference between this? Which do you recommend?) since it clears Entry Level Writting Class and R&C A? And so there will be no need for taking AWPE.

Do you think is worth to take an SAT II in writting perhaps on june to waive R&C A and jump into R&C B?

I would go with the College Writing R1A classes this fall - that is a combination of Entry Level Writing plus R&C A - most efficient way for you to cover both requirements in one class.

Wouldn’t bother with the SAT II as the bar is fairly high and about equivalent to the regular SAT portions; since you didn’t waive based on the SAT I, I suspect the June test would be a waste of your time.
