Reading from 470 to 550+. Give me essential advice to increase

My reading score is 470 and want to increase it to 550+ or even 500. Pls give me advice as I'm entering the December exam. I want to start with your advice as soon as possible. Thanks.

Pls comment and don't read then leave without commenting. Help people so that other people help you

Please give a analytical comments, stating what to do in details.

For critical reading, I highly recommend expanding your vocabulary. You would probably notice that there will always be a few difficult words in the sentence-completion section and even in the passages. Knowing what these words mean will instantly give you a boost in your grade. Therefore I recommend you learn some more words through book series like the Direct Hits series which hits about 20 challenging words in the critical reading section each test. If you are currently getting about 10-12 on your sentence completion, working on your vocabulary should bring it up to a 17-18 earning you about 6 raw points which would bring you to about 510 from your 470. However, you probably want more than just that and so I would also recommend reading with The Insider’s Essential Guide to SAT Critical Reading and Vocabulary. I wish I had it (but unfortunately do not) but have looked at reviews and some parts of the book and I think it can arguably be the best critical reading prep book. [SAT Critical Reading Prep . NOW Classroom . NOW | PBS](http://www.pbs.org/now/classroom/lessonplan-02.html) also gives some critical reading help. A third source of help could be barron’s 2400 which offers great strategies for the critical reading section which the rule of three being my personal favorite.

However, above all these, I also highly recommend trying practice papers. Practice papers will ensure you know how to answer the questions and how to pick out the right answer. If you have not already bought the blue blue (official study guide) get it because it is your key to success and you can learn vocabulary while practicing the sentence completion questions. A jump from 470 to 550 is definitely possible (In fact I think that you can push for a 600+ with hard work)

To get a 550, you need a raw score of about 39 out of 67.

For a 500, you need about 31. That’s right. You can leave half of the questions blank if the ones you answer are correct.

I would recommend that you take all three sections of the reading from a practice test, in one sitting, under the timed conditions. ONLY answer the question that you are 90% you are right on. Score it and see how you do. You might be surprised at your results

Oh My God!

Are you the same person who is expecting a 2300+ here?

What you need is fluency and confidence with English grammar.

Try copying out one of these every day, in longhand, on a clean sheet of paper. Take your time to make sure you understand each sentence grammatically as you write. Look up any words you don’t know.

[The Project Gutenberg eBook of Damm, A book of Calumny by H. L. Mencken.](<a href=“The Project Gutenberg eBook of Damn!, A book of Calumny by H. L. Mencken.”>The Project Gutenberg eBook of Damn!, A book of Calumny by H. L. Mencken.)

This will do you more good than cramming yet another dip-wad SAT prep book.

Substitute another author if you want, but I wouldn’t recommend it. (Skip VIII though, it’s awful.)

I like playing around sometimes. i didn’t even enter November Exam. i just wanted it to start fillling up so that it doesn’t fall into the 2nd page

More opinions pls

I’d probably have to see an example of your writing to be able to identify your reading deficiencies.

It would need to be a response to a passage, story, essay, or novel.

More,need more

Get Mike Barrett’s book. It is awesome. My reading got from 390 to 590.

^ got that book. Its great!!!
