reality check

i already posted this in the college admissions forum, but i wanted to get some feedback from lehigh biased people

I just got rejected, not deferred, from Wharton ED, and it made me realize that my chances for Duke and Princeton RD are virtually non-existant.
All of my stats are good except for my 2110 sat..... so i've narrowed it down to either Lehigh or BC.

Lehigh is closer, and i think that i could possibly get some merit scholarships there.

My dilemma is as follows: I woud love to attend either school, and i dont want to risk not getting into either. I'm considering applying ED round two to Lehigh. Do you think it's worth the commitment just to secure a spot at one of those schools?

Stats:

Very competitive public school
SAT: M 750 CR 690 W 670
GPA: 3.7 UW 4.42/5 W
Rank: 52/897

Will graduate with 7 varsity letters
- Captain of the lacrosse team, varsity since grade 9
- won multiple awards for lacrosse

Started my own business with nothing but a business plan, now i co-own the LLC - brought in nearly 50K last year

Volunteer firefighter

President of FBLA - Won state awards in 10th and 11th grade

Various awards and work experiance

any input would be appreciate, i just cant seem to make a decision

If you’re not sure you want to go to Lehigh, don’t apply EDII.

Seems to me you’re not a total auto-reject from Duke. (Princeton is another story; it’s a crapshoot.) I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to take your chances in RD with a bunch of other schools.

Are you a good enough lacrosse player to get recruited at some of the schools you’re interested in? Or at least to get a little bump because you’ve been in touch with the lax coach?

You’ve only mentioned Duke, Princeton, Lehigh and BC in your post. There’s got to be others you’re thinking of too. Bucknell? Trinity in Hartford? Hamilton?

I think you need to think bigger. You seem to just want to get it over with, to be able to relax. With your scores and stats, you’ll definitely get into someplace good. Relax a bit. Look at the big picture.

yea i looked at all those schools and i’ve managed to narrow it down to lehigh and BC. I really do love both of the schools and would be more than happy attending either. I like lehigh slightly more than BC at the moment, but i dont know if it’s worth the commitment. I’m good enough to play lax at a Division three schools, but definately not at any of the schools i’ve mentioned.

Princeton, Duke, Lehigh, and BC are my four absolute favorite schools…besides wharton lol

I’d think you’d have a good shot at BC and lehigh regular. I don’t think you should apply early if you don’t want to or are not sure of it.

thanks. Do any of you guys know if applying early increases or hurts my chances for a scholarship? I have always assumed that scholarships were used as recruiting tools, and if i apply to a binding agreement why should they waste a scholarship on me, but i could have the wrong idea

FYI, Lehigh only offers merit scholarships to the top of the applicant pool. I’m not sure your stats will get you there. For any of the top private schools, you should not count on merit money. If money is important, you’ll need to aim lower and target schools known for giving money. (Drew, for example.)

Your stats DO, however, put you in Lehigh’s range. Because Lehigh has gotten more and more competitive with every year, you should not consider it a safety. The same holds true for BC. You need a couple of colleges that are easier to get into, just in case. We don’t want to read about you in the spring when the threads start about not getting in anywhere.

i appreciate your concern, and i was already admitted into the honors college at pitt. I think i’ve decided to apply to Lehigh under the second round ED - hopefully i’ll see some of you guys there next year

YEAH hopefully ill get in and see everyone there too haha.

Effrum, good decision. Pitt’s biz program is hohum and the campus is, well, Oakland. They hype it, but imo, it’s the … dare I say it … pitts. Lots of crime, on the edge of the worst sections in Pgh (2 of them), the honors program helps, but it’s still a massified public education. The undergrad biz program is only a handful of years old, MBA program is ok but not spectacular. Aside from 10 or 15 home hoops games, there’s not a lot to attract, imo. Lehigh is lightyears beyond, if you can afford it. Good luck.

You should consider Wash U St. Louis.

they have an entrepreneurship major, nice size school, great campus with phenomenal dorms. (this is a different link even though it’s showing up the same)
