REALLY messed up in high school... Chances?

Everyone on here is crying because they got a 3.4 or something and saying that they really messed up. My freshman and sophmore year, i did awful in highschool. It wasn't because i didn't care, but sophmore year i was diagnosed with ADD and anemia (lack of iron in my blood because i'm vegetarian, makes you tired all the time and harder to concentrate).

So now, after i started taking iron supplements, my grades have really improved. I'm still left with a horrible 2.89 GPA (on a 4.0 scale, not weighted at our school), though. Junior year, last year, i got about a 3.5. And this year, senior year, I'm getting mostly all A's with a few B's. Took AP LA last year. This year I'm taking AP LA and AP American Gov.

So with this explanation of my screw ups, and great improvement, i'm hoping that will help a good deal. I have many ideas where to apply, but wondering if anyone else has suggestions?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

What are you planning to study? Does location matter?

Anyways, to answer the big question in your ‘Chances’… I would say that you still have a chance since schools love to see improvement in a student. In your essay you can talk about how you started off bad but you improved and even if you don’t mention this in your essay. Your grades will clearly show an improvement.

Also your ECs seems really good but the main thing about ECs is not just bombarding them in your application but you should have in mind what is so important of each of those for you. If you have a club or an activity that you ‘just did’, then there really isn’t meaning now is there… Just have those things in mind and you most definelty have a chance.

Hope this helped.

For location, i’d like to stay on the west coast, mainly Washington, California, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, or Hawaii. For my study plans, i’m really not sure. The only things i have in mind are something with writing, photography, or psychology. But i’m really not set on anything.
And thanks for your help!

University of Oregon- match
U of Denver-match
U of British Columbia- unless your a rich asian who can pay absolutely full tuition.no chance. I used to live up there and admissions here is a huge political issue up there.
San Diego State U- Sorry, they recently implemented minimum GPA requirements for in state admissions and Cali is notorious for not being nice to out of staters.
Washington State U- Reach
U of San Francisco-High Reach harder to get into that SDSU.

Try Montana state University, or U of Hawaii. Also Seattle University.

haha well i’m neither rich nor asian… So I really can’t even apply to SDSU with my GPA? And i think Washington State is easier to get into than U of O. And i might apply to U of Hawaii but i heard it’s only worth going there if youre going to study marine bio or some sort of Asian studies.
Thanks!

San Diego State U have a GPA calculator on their website. (: 9th grade isn’t included, if that’s at all helpful.

any more suggestions?

kOna - my son has nearly the same stats as you do. We live in so cal. I think U of O may be a bit of a reach for you, based on my conversations with admissions there - they are looking for 3.0, and only 10% of their admits last year were below that. He is applying there also. Send in every supplemental thing you can that they suggest - essays, teacher recs, etc. Also, you may want to wait to submit your application there until 7th semester has been finalized. Washington State is a reach-match, with only 8% OOS, so you may want to consider that. Try Oregon State also…and if you want to be in SF, try San Francisco State instead of University of San Francisco.

You didn’t say which state you’re from, but definitely try public colleges in your state as a safety. They have to take so many in-staters a year, so it’s probably one of your best shots if you’re worried. Also, Indiana University Bloomington! It’s far away from where you’re considering, but the Midwest is the best, and you match their standards :)

Oh, i’m from Washington State. Yeah IU looks good, if not a little above me with an average 3.57 GPA, but it’s pretty far away.

and elizabethh- what do you mean by 8% OOS?
and thanks everyone for your help.

hhhheeeellllllppppp

Kona, 8% OOS means out of state students. However if you’re from Washington State, that won’t be an issue for you - whereas for my S, who is from So Cal, it makes it harder to get in and also makes him a very significant minority among the student population, which can be uncomfortable for some people.

in no way is IU-Bloomington a safety but you could take a crack at it; they are trying to raise their ACT/SAT scores so as I said, not a safety…
