Okay.
I was arrogant and stupid and went out the night before the November test did badly on the Physics exam.
I took it with Lit and Math, got 720 and 730 respectively. Not too bad considering the state I was in but not pleased with these scores either.
This 560 on Physics. I know this will drag me down, and I can't take it again since I'm taking the reasoning test December. Exactly how much impact will this number have on my chances? (I don't even want to call it a score. I've never gotten a score this bad. I'm having serious doubts about my intellect. Seriously, not even a 650?)

I am a full IB Diploma candidate and I take Physics Higher Level. Getting 6s and on my mid-term semester report got a 7. (7 is equivalent to A,A+, 6 equivalent to A-,B+,B,B-, below that the range gets even wider. 7-1 scale) Will my school Physics grades make up for the fact that I got a 560 on the SAT II? How do I explain this?

IN A STATE OF PANIC
Please advise this poor soul

btw, NOT intending to major in physics at MIT.
considering the dual degree on linguistics and philosophy (Noam Chomsky!!!), and the polisci program

Do you have any other science SAT scores? MIT requires a math and a science. If this is your only science, you will be evaluated based on that score. As you don’t declare a major when you apply, MIT will not know what your intended major is (and therefore excuse your Physics score).

Do you already have a SAT score to submit? If so, you might want to take another science SAT 2 in place of it.

no i don’t have another science score!!!
this is grim.
i get the implication from your response that this score will be detrimental to my chances.
should i just not apply?

of course you should apply. you are talking about ONE score, just one part of the many aspects of your application. do your best to shine elsewhere. don’t worry about the score, you can’t change it (unless you opt to take a science SAT instead of the regular SAT in a week).

:( thank you for your reply…
I guess I’ll just try to ace the reasoning test, get a awesome letter from my physics or math teacher and just hope for the best.

A 560 is very, very low for MIT. The 25th percentile for admitted students on the science SAT II is 720. [Admissions Statistics | MIT Admissions](Admissions statistics | MIT Admissions). Your math subject test is also kinda low but not nearly as bad as the physics. The 560 also raises serious questions about your ability to do well in the core MIT physics sequence. If you are more interested in the social sciences than the hard sciences you might be happier at other colleges.

For RD, January (not December) is the last testing date, so I guess you can retake your science SAT 2 in January if you want to. The only problem is that you wont be able to see your score before you send it off to MIT.

JANUARY!!
THankyouthankyouthankyou i forgot about that, all the CommonApp schools don’t allow January scores I forgot MIT does!!!

@UMTYMP Student: I know, it’s pretty bad. But I love physics, and I get good grades in IB Physics HL, this subject test was the worst thing ever. like the worst score i’ve ever got on anything (still shocked…) But now I get the January test!! lol better make sure to prepare and sleep in early the night before:D

How much did you get in your SAT1?
You should somehow if allowed take the SAT2 phy instead of SAT1 in December.
I’m sorry to say but with a 560 YOU WILL DEFINITELY NOT GET IN.

Your SAT II in math is also very low, 30 points below the 25th percentile of admitted MIT applicants. I would retake both Math and Physics in January, and aim for at least 750 if you want a realistic shot.

i got 2190 on the reasoning test.
YES i’m aiming for 800s on both. seriously I am so embarrassed by these scores, I haven’t got anything like this my entire life… not even in middle school. i’m going to ask my parents for a prep course and study this time.

Keep in mind that you can use Chem, Bio, or Physics for your SAT 2 science. You don’t have to report the 560 (I don’t think), though if you do and you score a 750 on Bio or Chem, that is the score they will use.
