Hey everybody,
I go to a pretty competitive public high school in California. I really messed up freshman year with a really heavy course load. In soph. year, I dropped all my honors courses, but I still kind of messed up. First semester by GPA was about a 2.5. I really worked hard to get my gpa up to a 3.0 second semester. I am only taking one AP next year. What should I do? I really want to go to a decent college, just messed up along the way.

If anyone has any input it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Since you are still earlier on I think it should be fine but get A’s! High school is so much easier than college and I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I did. I graduated high school with a 2.8 GPA! I used to be a very good student all through out elementary and middle school but then slacked off in high school. A’s are attainable by everyone, it just takes the time and effort and it is not easy. You still have a chance but you really have to get A’s from now on. It also makes a difference depending on where you would like to attend college. If it is a competitive college then make sure to do extra well! I know it is tough but it will be worth it in the end rather than going through the regret of wishing you had done better! You still have 2 more years! Btw, if you are taking an AP course make sure you know you can pull a good grade in it. AP classes are a lot more demanding than Honors courses so if you struggled with honors really think about whether doing an AP course is right for you. I am not discouraging you but just be careful in the classes you pick. It is better to take easier classes and do well in those than overload yourself with tough classes in which you will not do well in.

Great advice ACT, i agree wholeheartedly!

Hey!

Alright, so you’ve got one and half more years, and your GPA is in the 2’s at the moment (cumulative). Don’t worry, there’s always ways to fix things, you can’t obviously completely get rid of it, but you can definitely do your part and give a 100% to make the best of what you’ve got.

For starters, and apologies for the cliche, but get that GPA as high as it goes! I’m not saying get all A’s, but get as many A’s as you can!
Secondly, looking at how your GPA is pulling you back, use AP’s, SAT’s, SAT2’s or the ACT to show colleges that your GPA isn’t an accurate manner of measuring what you are capable off.
Additionally, get involved in some strong, passionate ECs, if you aren’t already.

You can’t completely push away a mistake you made, but you can try your hardest to work around it. I really messed up my Freshman and Sophomore too. Like REALLY bad… but I realised in junior and senior year that I need to do well, I pulled it up, and now am happy with where I’m going.

Don’t be scared, you’ll be fine! Goodluck to you!

Thanks for all the replies guys!
