So last year I wasn’t capable of finishing my naval academy application completely, therefore I lacked a BGO interview as well as a medical examination. This year I have decided to try again, and I’m completely curious about my chances of getting into NAPS as a pre-nursing major at a current four year university.
First and foremost, my high school GPA unweighted was a 3.6, along with a few AP classes and a heavy load of honors classes. I participated in A LOT of ECs; being on the executive ASB board as vice president of student clubs, being varsity captain of my club basketball team, and being a varsity cheerleader. I’ve spent a lot of time being a golf instructor as well as tutoring kids. 100+ hours of community service, and special recognitions by my school and community. I had a lot of my teachers, deans, academy alumni, and other supervisors write me letters of rec. Unfortunately I did not take AP calc or AP physics, but did fairly well in the regular class. I don’t have an outstanding SAT or ACT score, it’s pretty average. 22 composite, yes I know that is weak. Math was never really my thing, writing was always my strong side. I passed AP Lit with a 3 on the test, and to my surprise received an A- in my college writing class.
I currently attend PLNU and was forced to do nursing by my parents because I am on GI bill. The nursing program at PLNU is one of the most challenging and selective nursing programs in San Diego (Still I do not feel comfortable in a civilian college. I understand I receive freedom, but I feel like I am wasting potential time.) I did AFROTC for a little bit (hence, I say a little bit because I really couldn’t give my navy dream up and settle for a different branch) , and ended my first fall semester with a 3.2, and as of right now have a 3.4 for spring semester. I have taken biology(anatomy) and chemistry, writing, and psychology. I understand NAPS may not take me because of my college GPA, but do you think they’d take me because my major does not really correlate with any of their majors? Even if they did, my hopes were to do chemistry at the academy, or anything relatively similar to my courses now.
I emphasized how I really thinking go to NAPS would help me to my BGO since I am a nursing major.
I have a presidential and congressional nomination (I know that’s not a big deal because it’s ultimately up to the academy).
I just wanted a few opinions on this so I can figure out a few back up plans. Either way I want to pursue a career as a Naval Officer, NROTC in San Diego does not accept nursing students so I cannot do their college program. I would be looking at NCP and OCS. I appreciate the help and advice in advance!
ALSO: would it be a good idea to write a letter to admissions explaining why I wish to attend NAPS so much?
