The Wait

Hello,

This is my second time applying to USNA and I still have not heard back. Last year I was wait listed to NAPS and rejected at the last possible date. I currently am a member of a NROTC unit(Marine Option) and pulled a 3.5 GPA with 18 credits fall semester. Hopefully I hear some good news soon, but I do have a quick question. Is it possible for second time candidates to receive admission to NAPS? My BGO and CO believe that it is and I have heard mixed answers from officials. I was wondering if anyone has had heard of a second (or third) time applicant get selected for NAPS?

I too am a college applicant. According to usna.edu and my BGO, NAPS is only offered to athletes and those who are not scholastically qualified for the academy. After achieving a 3.5 GPA in college, I would assume you are scholastically qualified; therefore you will probably not be offered NAPS.

I still have not heard anything from USNA. Just a question, why did you decline to attend NAPS last year if you had intentions of reapplying? Successful completion of NAPS is ALMOST a guarantee of admission to USNA…

Best of luck!

Correct on the NAPS. Sadly or gladly, you’re too “good” to make the NAPS list this time.

I believe he said he was wait-listed and ultimately declined from NAPS last year.

NICE work this season, no matter how it comes out relative to USNA. I’m betting you’ll make an outstanding Marine. And THAT is your target. Keep shooting straight.

Whistle Pig is correct, I was wait listed to NAPS and ultimately denied admission to NAPS. It was quite the heartbreak. As everyone is well aware, applying to the Naval Academy is a completely different type of adventure. The waiting time for the academy, as we all know, seems to out last every other college admission wait out there. As for the NAPS, seeing as I achieved a 3.5 GPA it does make sense that NAPS would be out of my reach, but my CO was a NAPSter and was a second time applicant when he got the nod from NAPS. He seems to think that it is based on SAT scores for NAPS and he personally recommended NAPS for me. Who knows, the end goal is a commission that I am well on the path to receiving. The Naval Academy was a personal goal after seeing much of my family get their bars through the prestigious institution. Seeing as no news is good news for the most part, I still have hope! I will keep everyone updated and if any one is lurking and wants to know what NROTC life is like I will be glad to answer, from a un filtered lens of a 4/C. It isn’t as easy as some people make it out to be. Hardly an easy fall back as some describe it! Keep the faith!

A quick update, I got notification that I was wait listed to NAPS. So looks like college applicants and second timers can get NAPS. Hopefully this year turns out better than the last. Keep the faith!

Congratulations! Best of luck in the process. Keep us posted!

Thank you! I received some advice from current and former NAPS students on how to get yourself off the wait list and get in. Hopefully this year is the year! I will keep everyone updated!

Actually, there was a sizable number of people that attended my NAPS class who were not athletic but academically strong, with several of my platoon mates coming from colleges like Texas A&M or UVA with good academic standings with GPA’s ranging from 3.2 - 3.8 and even better when they were in high schools. I don’t know where some are getting the notion that someone can be too “good” for NAPS. It is true that a lot of athletes are sent to NAPS for the purpose of recruitment and although some shouldn’t belong (and they subsequently do get dropped), the majority of them are actually very solid candidates and academically strong. I.E. At least two individuals I know personally at NAPS that were recruited for Basketball and Football were valedictorians from their high schools. Although NAPS is indeed a “Prep” school, not everyone who is sent here is under qualified or undeserving of an appointment to the Academy. One must also keep in mind that a lot of enlisted Sailors get sent to NAPS too, majority of them coming from Nuclear Power School. Anyways, at Deadmau55, wish you the best and hope you will receive an appointment to the Naval Academy one way or another.

I agree with the above. My daughter was triple Q’d and validated out of chem, physics and math classes and was fortunate enough to gain a spot at NAPS. Nothing is off the table from what I have seen.
