I just applied EA, but regardless of the admission decision, I am deferring college to go on a yearlong exchange; I don't have my country assignment yet, but I've been accepted into the exchange program so I'm definitely going somewhere. If I don't get in this year but decide to apply again next year as a postgraduate, will that necessarily look worse if they know that they already rejected me the previous year? Or will they not care?

They will not care, but unless something changes in your application, you'll probably be rejected for the same reasons as the first time around...

Well, my essays and short answers will probably change a little, and so might my extracurriculars.... Eh, we'll see if I get in this time around. You already answered my question by saying they wouldn't care. I hope that's true....

ACTUALLY
i just heard a report on NPR about the growing number of students who skip a yeard after high school before entering college, and it turns out that colleges actually LIKE that!
it shows that you have a dedication to something
I was thinking of doing that but idk
what program are you doing?

I'm going with Rotary Youth Exchange, and one of the best districts in the country in terms of preparing their students to go abroad. I don't regret choosing them one bit; I mean, the connections I've already made and the many more I will make! Rotary could probably part the Red Sea if they felt like it, :P they have so much influence internationally.

I doubt that a foreign exchange alone is going to get me accepted to Stanford, although since I'm a hopeful foreign languages major, it may be a big thing in my favor... I'll keep my fingers crossed, though. There's no telling what those admissions officers will think of me.
