Reason your are rejected or waitlisted by UCLA

Congratulations to all people accepted to UCB!

Any of you is rejected or waitlisted by UCLA? Can you think of the reasons for that (besides holistic admission is a crapshoot)?

This is for fun only. Don’t be snarky and attack each other.

The one for sure that trips up a lot of people is that it is extremely difficult to get in for CS at UCLA since they offer it only in Engineering which has a < 10 % acceptance rate. Whereas with Berkeley you have the choice of CS in Engineering (equally as difficult if not harder to get into), or CS in L&S which is slightly easier to get into.

I think UCLA retaliated my daughter because she did not send SAT score reports to UCLA. She only sent them to UCB.

I applied to L&S for Berkeley but Engineering for LA, so same as what @ProfessorPlum168 is saying

@coolweather For UCs you’re only supposed to send them to one campus and they share scores with all UC campuses. They don’t care what campus you select to send it to. Trust me the AOs are not petty nor do they have time to care who you sent scores to. As long as they get them they’re good.

I was accepted into UCB CoE for EECS, and waitlisted at UCLA for CSE (Math as alternate major)

@10s4life I knew what you said. It’s a fun thread. Every reason is acceptable here. It has nothing to do with logic or the truth.

@coolweather I missed your last sentence at you original post. Congrats on your daughter getting into cal!

Waitlisted UCLA. Ucla just doesn’t take as many students as cal from our local high school for whatever reason.

Didn’t even TRY to bribe anyone. Also, too darn beautiful

20 years later I still don’t have an answer why accepted by UCB and rejected by UCLA

Congrats to all you kiddos, wherever you go you will do great!

Speaking of fun, I think the score is 1 to 1 as far as “side door” acceptances. UCB had the one guy who’s dad hired someone to take the SAT for him, while UCLA has the imposter soccer player girl. Maybe I missed others.

UCLA and UCB have an agreement to let each other know which applicants they plan to admit so that they can have better yield management. Sometimes one has to pay the other to get the desired applicants.

My son is waitlisted in engineering. I am thankfully sadder about this than he is, though he did talk about attending if admitted. Not sure why waitlisted besides competitive major. Part of me wants to contact UCLA (I won’t) and let them know how grateful I am my son found his voice thanks to UCLA grad students, an autism intervention program, and UCLA. He was non-verbal before UCLA, and left speaking words. Thank you UCLA! And well, part of me knows the engineering school will open more horizons for him where he can grow and thrive, I know from experience UCLA has just amazing students and professors, and an added bonus is it is the best UC for music studies. Any how, best of luck to everyone on yhe wait list!

My daughter had an essay on her Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley internship, may be UCLA thought she would get selected in UC Berkeley and would not join UCLA, which is actually true; UC Berkeley was one of her top 2 choices and UCLA was not in her top 5 choices.

I would imagine that there is a lot of “hey, this kid’s so good they are going to get into other great school X and probably won’t even come here so why offer them admittance” than we realize. Yield protection. A friend of D’s (couple of years ahead of her - valedictorian, blah, blah) was admitted to Cal AND UCLA and rejected by Cal Poly SLO. She wound up at UCLA and graduated with an engineering degree. Still shake my head at that one. D was admitted to all three schools, but I’m not sure what the magic formula was for her - major? EC’s? essays?

Point being, NEVER let a rejection at one school predict a kid’s chances at another - you never know what the AO’s are looking for when “building” their class of admits.
