Reasons to go to U of M

If you had to convince someone to go to U of M what would you say? Also is there anything you could say to make someone pick U of M over HPYM?

ann arbor is a sick awesome college town

michigan football

michigan has more fulbright scholars than any other university (from '90s til now)

all their professional schools are highly ranked (med school: #6, b school: #12)

i can’t think up a good reason why to pick michigan over HYPM though.

Cost (for in-state students)

Traditional college atmosphere

Athletics

Close to home

UMich education is excellent without a doubt. However, I think its educational level, as well as student intellect, is quite lower than HPYM. Keep in mind the HPYM are world’s best universities. The only reason one might choose Michigan over those world class universities is financial status - for instates.

However, when I was deciding which college to attend, UMich was one of those. I loved Michigan’s pride, and their business & economics (subjects I’m interested in) are very strong.

Bragging rights? If you are OOS you can brag that you are paying the highest tuition in the country for a state university.

I chose Michigan over several other elite universities (none quite as good as HYPSM though), including 4 Ivies, for several reasons:

1) I felt more at home when visiting the campus
2) I loved Ann Arbor
3) Students seemed friendlier, more laid back and less pretentious
4) Michigan is very strong in my subjects of interest (Econ, History, Math, Physics and Political Science)

In retrospect, the decision was certainly the right one for additional reasons. Ann Arbor turned out to be even better than I had initially thought. School spirit at Michigan is unrivaled.

This said, Michigan over HYPSM only makes sense if:

1) Michigan costs significantly less
2) Michigan is much stronger in a particular field (Michigan over Yale and Harvard for Engineering)
3) One really likes the Michigan environment MUCH more than the HYPSM environment.

“Bragging rights? If you are OOS you can brag that you are paying the highest tuition in the country for a state university.”

2010-2011 COST OF ATTENDANCE:

Michigan is clearly the cheapest of the 6 aglages.

^none of those are state schools

Hahaha, I find it insulting that somebody should differentiate. Michigan is far superior to 99% of private universities. Whether it is public or private should not even enter the discussion. Michigan should not be expected to charge lower tuition simply because it is public.

That said, Cal and UCLA, not Michigan, are the most expensive public universities in the nation.

Im not arguing for or against, just restating what he said, calm down. Im sure you are/ will be more successful than many HYPSM grads.

I know hahahaha, but I truly find it insulting when somebody holds Michigan to a lower standard just because it is public. How would you feel if somebody expected you to work for a lower salary because of your race or religion? That’s what people who differentiate between publics and privates are doing.

Alexandre, keep in mind that the people that do this dont matter at all. Employers and grad schools know how good the school is and that is all that matters. I have a relative that turned down 3 schools in the top 15 and opted for Michigan because of “fit.”

IsaacM: If by chance you are asking because you are thinking about the upcoming essay or whether or not to apply…my advice will always be go see it for YOURSELF do not base your choice on the status opinion of others or on the USNWR: however, I assure you that you will see, feel and understand THE MICHIGAN DIFFERENCE and your search will then be over. Attending the U of M is an incredible life experience! I just returned from the Freshman orientation and I told my s many, many times…You are one lucky boy!! Oh and if you are OOS like we are…you will be so impressed by the wonderful and welcoming Michigan folks…you can keep the elitists…give me the real folks of the Midwest any day. Ann Arbor is an incredible college town… one of the best in the country. GO BLUE!!!

I underlined the portions of my two sentence post that you seem to have misunderstood. Thanks for sharing your feelings about how state universities and private colleges should not be differentiated despite the fact that they do have a different cost approach towards tuition and that was clearly the point of my post. Hopefully we can agree that private or state supported UM is a great university.

If you don’t like it hot, the weather’s great!

HYPM? what the fudge happened to Stanford lols?

"Alexandre, keep in mind that the people that do this dont matter at all. Employers and grad schools know how good the school is and that is all that matters. I have a relative that turned down 3 schools in the top 15 and opted for Michigan because of “fit.” "

hahahaha, your relative made the right decision if he felt more at home at Michigan. Besides, where it matters (academically), Michigan is among the top 20 for sure (very likely among the top 15 and arguably among the top 10), so it is not like sacrificed on quality.
