Reasons to Love Dartmouth

To counter the negative publicity Dartmouth has recently garnered, let's have a thread to celebrate what we and/or our children love about the school.

1) The accessibility of the professors.

An anecdote to illustrate: My D had concerns about a course she would take the next term to satisfy a distribution requirement. This course would be co-taught by two professors, one from a social science department and the other from a science. After arranging to speak with one of the professors, D felt much more comfortable and decided to move forward with her enrollment. Imagine her surprise when a day or so later she received an unsolicited email from the second professor. He had heard from his peer that she had had questions, and he offered to meet her too to discuss. Above and beyond!

Oh my, don’t get me started. I’ll chime in with the many conversations that '13 D has had with her thesis advisor and other favorite professors this last month as she tried to decide which PhD program to choose. The support doesn’t stop when you leave Hanover. [She chose Berkeley – yay!!]

I’ll limit myself to one anecdote. D was on her way from the Choates to the Inn to catch the coach to Logan her first year to come home for winter break. Of course, it had to have snowed heavily the night before, and the rolling bag was losing to the snow. Two professors driving by stopped and helped her make it to the bus stop. Oh, and then there was the professor who gave her a piggyback ride across the Green after a major storm when she came out in flip flops. (I lied about the one anecdote.) And, there was the time she left her luggage at the wall by the Inn for 15 minutes while she went to find her dorm room and it was still there when she got back. I got more …

3 favorite things:

 1. Hanover is an absolutely wonderful town. People are friendly, and it is very safe to walk around at any time.
 2. Dartmouth Greek life has the most inclusive social scene I am aware of. All parties are open to all students. At other schools, kids are turned away for not being seen as hot enough. Seriously. I also love that the kids have friends in all different frats and sororities, as well as independents. The open social scene helps.
 3. The focus on undergraduates. Dartmouth profs care about their students. The education is superb.

The sheer beauty of the place. No better spot to experience the quintessence of the four seasons.

The rigor and quality of the academic experience, uncompromising standards.

Dedication of faculty to teaching and to students.

An ethos of “doing it all” and “keeping it real”, it is not just an ivory tower.

History of internationalism with the best overseas study programs.

Love of the school by students and alumni unrivalled. It’s a place that gets into one’s soul.

The personal attention and support, not just from the professors but also the administration.

My D was admitted to the hospital yesterday, and today a dean visited her for over half an hour to stress that she has the school’s full support. She even offered to find a place on campus for DH if needed.

Wow, sorry to hear about your daughter, but that’s nice that the administration is helping.

Thank you, GA2012Mom, it’s a very difficult time, but I’m so grateful for Dartmouth’s support.

I’ve always told my children that it’s easy to be good when things are going their way, but they show their true character when the chips are down. With D incapacitated, Dartmouth is showing how much they care and how much they want her to be able to succeed.

My prayers are with you Hard Knocks. I hope your daughter is ok, and I’m glad to hear (but not the least surprised) that the college is supportive.
