Rec letter choice

I am transferring as an IR-econ major. I’ve already secured a letter from an IR professor who likes me a lot. I need one more, but I ant decide between the following two:

  1. Econ (stat) professor who likes me a lot, not tenure tracked, not a native speaker.
  2. IR professor who doesn’t like me as much, tenure tracked, native speaker and a good writer.

I’ve got an A in both classes.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Prof 1. It isn’t important that he isn’t a native speaker.

I’m just worried the letter might sound generic.

You are more likely to get a generic letter from someone who doesn’t like you as much. If the prof is a teacher here in America, there’s a good chance he is fluent enough to write a persuasive letter of recommendation about a kid he really likes.

Seriously, be realistic. Letters of rec are not supposed to be Shakespearian. They are supposed to give the admissions officer an insight into your character. The person who likes you best will be better at doing that. Go with the other guy if you really want a generic letter.

Thank you Linda. Your advice is really insightful. My apologies for my immature thoughts.
