Rec Question?

I am applying to several schools and I wanted to know how important is it that the recs are from college professors? One of the main reasons I want to leave UF is because I have no contact whatsoever with the professors (e.g. 80 kids in my Modern Physics class) and therefore would not entrust them with my recommendations. Do you think it would be ok to get recs from high school teachers who know you really well (and by well I mean invited to wedding well) and have them focus on your post-secondary activities and academic abilities? I could really use the advice because I'm going nuts about whether to supplement their recs with a college professor who doesn't know much about me. Thanks for your time.

You have no classes that don't have 80 students? :(

My DFQ class has about 45 (smallest class)... that's why I want out - I don't want to be another number (1/50000 at that)

I'd say you're pretty lucky to be going to a public uni with lower division classes less than 100 students, but I'm also coming from a UC (California public, that is) perspective.

A point, though, if you don't feel like you're getting to know your professors, and it isn't because of lack of initiative on your part. From what I've seen (and take this with a grain of salt: I haven't looked too hard), most colleges are willing to take recommendations from TAs and, particularly if you're a freshman, will consider high school recommendations though they do prefer college recs.

Also, have you kept in touch with these high school teachers? That might make it easier for you.

Of course, the best answer is to ask the university in question and see what they say.

I'm a freshman, this is my second semester on campus and the reason I have classes with less than 100 students is because I had 30 credits from AP exams so I'm not in intro classes. Moreover, I have maintained contact with my high school teachers as they are some of my best friends (great relationships with my teachers) and the thing about the TAs is... I don't have any discussion periods (where TAs usually teach) because of my higher level classes and therefore have not met any professor or TA who knows me well enough to write a recommendation I would feel comfortable submitting to any of the universities I'm applying to (I need all the help I can get I suppose). Thanks for the advice and I'm going to try and contact the admissions offices of the respective universities.
