About when exactly should I sent my teachers who are writing me recommendations thank yous? Just a few days after having asked, or when I know they've entered them into the computer system (in the case of the common App.)? I asked them this last Wed. and Thursday respectively, and am wondering if I should fill out the cards now, or in a week or two.

In addition, my mother and I have heard of 'gift giving' to Rec writers, but we feel this is a bit of an overkill. (I bought one teacher a book, and burned another a CD specially made, at the end of last year, and gave one I am not getting a rec from Wall*E.) However, we think a nice mix of homemade cookies would be appropriate, and not flashy or a 'bribe' vibe.
Are we right about that?

I have a feeling chocolate chip, oatmeal, and pumpkin cookies go over well for almost everyone...

Or should I send thank you notes now, and cookies after the letters have been turned in? :)

You send them handwritten thank-you notes after they’ve written the recommendations. Then, when you’re accepted to colleges, you let them know.

If you want to give a present, something like homemade cookies is nice, but not necessary. The best gift is a note that reflects heartfelt appreciation of how the people have supported you in your dreams.

Saying this as someone who has written recommendations. Unfortunately, most students don’t do anything to show appreciation. They don’t even bother to say when they’ve gotten acceptances. :(

I love my teachers very much. For the most part, although High School is still high school, and homework is annoying no matter what sometimes, I’ve had amazing teachers- ones from my freshman year still say Hi when they see me in the halls, and the rec givers are no different, so I’m going to write thank yous (and probably include the cookies, because I like baking, and I think it adds a ‘me’ touch.).

I had a friend who graduated last year, and told everyone by showing up in his Yale shirt after he had decided what school he’d be attending. I hope to do something similar- once I know where I’m going, I’ll tell everyone. (I actually volunteer for my old elementary school, so my list of teachers to tell includes my old principle, my 5th grade teacher, and my old librarian as well as my HS teachers. xD)
