Recalculate EFAN?

I wanted to avoid the Parents PLUS loan so I called UCLA and asked how I would go about that since I will be getting scholarships that could cover the cost that the PLUS loan would have covered.

They said I had to report those scholarships so they can recalculate my EFAN. Does that mean I will be getting less need-based money? Because then, my scholarships won't help and then I'll end up having to take out the plus loan. Anybody have experience on a new efan after you reported your scholarships?
Thanks

From what I understand, outside scholarships will replace/reduce private or unsubsidized loans and won’t affect your grants. Can your outside scholarships be disbursed directly to you or will they go to the school? If they are going to you then you can just decline the parents ’ plus loan, and at the beginning of each quarter, you will receive a bill from the registrar for whatever balance that is not covered by your financial aid package. You can then write a check to pay for that balance. Did that help? I am not very good at explaining.

yeah i sorta get it. thanks for the reply! the fao can be so unhelpful because they rush their answers.

well the outside scholarships are going directly to my school. so that means are grants are lowered huh? and that means that parents loan amount will still stay the same. :/

should i even report my scholarships at the moment? can i just decline the parents plus loan and then ask for the “proof of enrollment” later to send to the agencies that will send my scholarships to ucla?

oh im sorry. i totally did not read your response properly. loll

so im hoping it reduces the unsubsidized/private loans only!

I am almost positive that your outside scholarships, which are “private” scholarships (versus UCLA/state)will reduce the unsubsidized/private loans. Just to be sure, I would call up the financial office to tell them about the scholarships , and then ask how they will affect your financial package. Let me know how it turns out.

I did call and ask. -_- The lady wouldn’t tell me exactly what it would change- she just kept saying “your best bet is to report your scholarships and see what changes”.

like really, no help at all. but if i do get an answer soon i will let you know how it goes.

personally, i don’t report scholarships because there is a possibility that reporting them might reduce the grant amount. then again, i don’t get that much in loans.

Wouldn’t they figure out anyways because the outside scholarships end up sending to UCLA. Then they would recalculate again? right? cuz if they don’t i wont report either. :]

What if outside scholarships and stipends are given directly to you and not the school? I worked hard for that money, and I don’t want to spend it on school fees. Will they rescind your admission if you don’t report that?

I don’t think so oyster. They couldn’t find out what checks you deposited in your own account from scholarships.
My concern is the ones that are actually sent to the school rather than me.

oyster I am having a similar problem.
On my eFAN it says that I have to take out unsubsidized loans and the plus loans.
I am not sure on what plus loans are. Could you clarify that for me?

Ok and I heard around that taking out any amount of unsubsidized loans is not a good idea at all because once you accept it the interest starts to pile up as soon as ucla gets the money whereas subsidized loans dont charge interest until about 6 months after you graduate.

I have a question:
I really really do not want to take out unsubsidized loans but it states I have to take 2000 dollars worth of it. Is there a way when I submit my eFAN that I add more money to the subsidized amount of which they are offering me to cover for what I am not accepting for the unsubdized loans? In a way add the 2000 dollars to my subsidized loans?

I don’t know much about loans, sorry

If you call the finaid office, they can help clarify things very well. But you might want to be careful in case your question pertains to something you don’t want them to know about, esp if they ask for your ID number

Wow how complicating. I’m with you Jinsoul- just trying to avoid the private and unsubsidized loans.

The Parent PLUS loan is a private loan- usually around 8-10% interest and interest starts to collect once its distributed.

Heyitspam, it would help if you find out for sure if your scholarship has to be disbursed to UCLA. Ask if you have a choice to have the money deposited to your account or they hang on to the money and you get reimbursed by submitting a copy of the tuition bill.

You will get a new eFAN if the scholarship is given directly to the school. They won’t find out if the scholarship is given directly to you because they don’t check. I’ve received both types of scholarships and I have never been asked about the unreported ones.

Grassbandit, when you did report a scholarship- what did they end up changing in your efan?

Just to be clear, I didn’t personally report them. The scholarships were sent to the school and they handle the rest.

They reduced the loan amount. I had grants, loans, and work study to begin with.

When I reported my scholarships (the scholarships was suppose to be send to the school…so there wasnt much I can do about it), I got back a new report. I was expecting them to take off my loans, instead they took off my SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNITION AWARD by the amount that I recieved from my outside scholarships. I thought that was just mess up. ** I mean all those efforts of trying to get scholarships in order to pay off college but instead still end up w/ the same amount of loans… it’s like I dont even need to apply for all those scholarships. So advice to you guys, don’t report your scholarships…unless they’re being sent to the school.

^^ are you serious? that’s a disappointment.

what if we dont report it at all and just wait til they do send it to ucla? is it even mandatory to do anything with our efan?

Well since you got scholarships that took away from your university grant (scholarship recognition award) then the university can give some other needy student some money. You just helped someone out!
