Does Vassar recalculate GPA? I live in NY and we use a numerical scale (1-100) for GPA. I do very well in my academic classes, but my required electives brings me down...I have to take so many of them (I have 80s or low 90s in them). Plus, my high school added my 8th grade grades (I took them to receive HS credit) to my transcript and and weighted them twice. So does anybody know if Vassar takes into consideration only core academic courses? It just seems unfair for people to have poor grades in academic classes, yet stellar grades in electives and have the same GPA as you.. i don't know. any insight would be appreciated.

Vassar wants to see that you have taken a challenging course load. If someone presents a GPA that is very high but they haven’t taken many AP or honors courses, they would not be as high on the list as a person with perhaps fewer A’s but who took lots of AP and honors courses. My understanding is that they do a pretty good job of evaluating potential students, so I wouldn’t worry about anything being “unfair”. It IS tough to get into Vassar, so you either will or you won’t. Best you can do is keep taking tough classes (if you are a junior) and do the best you can in them. You will need decent SAT or ACT scores, so make sure you are able to do that, and then, write some killer essays. Good luck!

I’m a senior who’s applying ED 2. I took 2 AP classes junior year and am taking 3 this year. My school doesn’t offer many AP classes and I couldn’t take some because of scheduling conflicts+ transferring schools. Should I note this in the extra info section of Vassar’s common app?
