Received the SECNAV nomination...

Hows it going everyone. I have a question regarding my SECNAV nomination. I am currently an enlisted member in the USN and I found out I have received the SECNAV nomination via my on-line application. Does anyone know if receiving the SECNAV nom. guarantees a candidate admissions to NAPS at the very least?

Theoretically, no but in reality, perhaps. All the SecNav nomination does is provide command endorsement. I think, by instruction, they are supposed to provide the endorsement partially based on academic potential but it is mostly an evaluation of your officer potential. The Academy portion of the application is used to determine your academic capabilities. With that said, a command endorsement will ensure that Admissions will give you every benefit of the doubt in giving you a chance to prove yourself academically. Fleet inputs are invaluable to the overall makeup of the Brigade. Good luck.

The answer to your question is not nearly so theoretical, confounding, or pondersome as might be suggested.

Your answer is “no.”

But take great comfort in recognizing that for any/all types of nominations, the answer is exactly the same. NO. None guarantees admissions to NAPS or a foundation school or USNA. A nomination, even a principal, is necessary but not sufficient for admission in and of itself.

Again, the precise answer …no.

Don’t believe everything you read on this forum.

As I pointed out earlier, the SecNav nomination is much more than a nomination, it also being the command’s endorsement. The entire nomination package writeup is reviewed by Admissions, all notes and comments, everything. As anyone who has ever served knows, these writeups are the make-break in competitive endeavors. A simple nomination with a superb endorsement will weigh much more heavily with admissions than a mediocre one.

With that said, USNA never meets the 85 total fleet nominations available, and, with a strong command endorsement, you will be given every possible opportunity to succeed.

A secnavy nomination will weigh heavily with the admissions office. Congratulations on your acheivement in the field. May you wear those achievements humbly.
