I’ll be joining some college friends for a game at West Point on Oct. 22-23. None of us know the area. What would be a good place for 4-5 couples to have an extended dinner and conversation on Friday night?

There really aren’t many restaurants in Highland Falls and none of them would be considered fine dining or conducive to unhurried conversation. The cadets love American Burrito, and it’s probably the best restaurant on the small strip leading up to the post, but all of the restaurants (mostly pizza and fast food joints) are small and will be crowded after the game. The best place anywhere near West Point is the Thayer Hotel (on post), but you’d need to make a reservation well in advance for a spot there. There are some nice restaurants in nearby Newburgh. Our favorite is Blu Pointe, but there are several other choices on that strip along the Hudson. I’d recommend checking those out.

It’s further north than Newburgh, but take a look at the Ship Lantern Inn in Milton. Straight up 9-W. Agree that Blu Pointe is a good option. We go there for family occasions.
