Really sorry to bother you with these weird questions, but there’s really no one to help me here in Europe when it comes to applying to US universities…
When applying to LSU, under “Employment/U.S Military Status” a question that I have to answer to continue is this:

  • I hereby swear or affirm under penalty of perjury, in accordance with requirements of the Military Selective Service Act and the requirements of Louisiana State Law R.S. 17:3151, the following:

the options are: I have registered or will register
I am under 18
I am an international student
I am excused from registration.

Anyone know what exactly this is talking about? I searched on the web, and I didn’t find anything…
Also, University of Georgia contacted me, they said I should apply as an international student, as I attended a SLO. high school. Since no other school replied, I figured I’d apply to ALL schools as international. At Apply texas, I applied to Texas Tech and it wouldn’t let me through when it asked me “what visa will you have when you will study here”. Obviously I didn’t have an answer, since I don’t need a visa, I have a US citizenship. So I called admissions and waited 5 minutes while they discussed my situation… They then told me to re-do the application as a US citizen, but then I got stuck at the telephone number, since I have an EU phone provider and our numbers are 9-digit, and it told me to enter a 10-digit phone number…
I also wonder how they’ll look at my grades this way. My school doesn’t rank, and our grades are on a 1-5 scale.
Thanks for all your help, though!

This is military draft ("Selective Service) registration law, which applies to all U.S. citizen young males. As you know, at this time there is no military draft and hasnt been one for about 40 years. However, the government still requires that males register when they become 18 years of age. And yes, some people were prosecuted for not registering, but I think that is relatively rare because to be eligible for federal student aid, you must registered with the Selective Service. Your case may be somewhat different, since you have been living abroad. You need to inquire further about this with your target colleges and even the U.S. consulate in your current location.

By the way, it’s curious that UGA classifies you as an “international student.” Again, there are experts in U.S. Senate offices (I would try the Senate offices of one of the big states where visa/international travel issues often arise; New York; Georgia, Maryland). If they decline to help because you are not a resident of their U.S. State, contact your closests U.S. consulate office.

Ok, thanks for the info. I got through the Texas tech application by putting my brother’s number instead of mine, since he lives in the US. So I’m almost finished with that, as for LSU and the military thing, seeing as it is not a minor thing, I’ll call them. Thanks, I’ll notify you on how it goes.

^^Acck!! Don’t do that. That’s fraud.

If you are under 18, choose the under 18 option on the application. If you are over 18, register for selective service. US citizen males must register even if they’re living abroad. It takes a couple of minutes using the website. https://www.sss.gov/Home/Registration If you haven’t turned 18 yet, but will be soon, you can pre-register on the website and they’ll automatically register you closer to your birthday.

bouders: thanks for the info! The last thing I want is to be wanter for fraud or something! Haha! Thanks, I am 18, turned March 12th, so I’ll register.

“there’s really no one to help me here in Europe when it comes to applying to US universities…”

Try the closest office of EducationUSA. If you can’t visit in person, the counselors there should be able to give you some help by phone or email: https://educationusa.state.gov/ Someone in that office probably has experience helping citizens abroad like you. If not, they have colleagues in other offices who do have that experience.

Thanks for the info, happymomof1! I’m actuall 80% done now anyway, thanks to all you nice people

Another good engineering school that flies under the radar: Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, TN.

That’s so awesome, Nerdyparent, and it’s just 1 hour 40 mins away from the GRAND OLE OPRY! thanks!

I have everything I need now to apply, I also translated my score reports to english and all, and my applications are all almost finished, but I just need to know: how do I tell the schools my school doesn’t rank? Should I ask my counselor to write it down and sign it and for me to include with all the transcripts and all?
And should I also apply to UT Austin at this point? Or should I wait to first take the ACT and get the scores back? I think someone said it’s possible to apply and send the scores AFTER we got them.
Thanks!

I’m applying to all texas schools today, so can someone tell me if it’s a good idea to apply to UT austin as well or should I wait to get my ACT scores back?

I’d like to thank everyone here for helping me so far! You’ve all been awesome! I’ve applied to LSU, I just need to sen in the HS transcripts… Same for Texas Tech, they have everything but the transcripts. However, I’m having some trouble with Texas Tech and A&M… Both require me to provide class rank. Thing is our high school has NEVER ranked. Also, under A&M’s Q&A, it says this:
https://tamuoar.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/773/kw/Can%20I%20upload%20a%20signed%20text%20document%20confirming%20my%20school%20doesn&/related/1
Our high school doesn’t have a profile! Looking at the requirements, I have no idea where I’m gonna get this info.
https://tamuoar.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1485/kw/Can%20I%20upload%20a%20signed%20text%20document%20confirming%20my%20school%20doesn&
Do you think it is possible for my counselor to just write a letter saying our school doesn’t rank and doesn’t have a profile or something?
As for Texas tech, this is what is says on their website:
“Have an official high school transcript showing GPA and class rank sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The transcript must state the diploma type or further documentation may be required. Senior courses in progress must be provided on the transcript, a grade report, or listed on the ApplyTexas Application form. A final official high school transcript showing graduation date will be required after graduation and will become part of the student’s permanent record. A student with a GED must submit official GED scores as well as a partial high school transcript. If no rank is provided on the high school transcript, one will be assigned.”

Again, should I send in my score report and include a letter of the counselor saying that we don’t rank?
And is it EXTREMELY helpful for me to apply to Texas A&M before Sept. 1st? Tommorow’s the 31st, and I could go to school to get all this stuff, but we start school on Sept. 1st, so I’m just wondering if there’s any point waking up at 7 in the morning to do this…
Thanks everyone and sorry for the bloated question!

Call the admissions offices, I think. Human being to human being.

I know it’s late in the game, but Bradley is interesting, and in the same city as Caterpillar’s headquarters. Application is free, I believe.

Well, you were right, 50N40W! I contacted A&M and a person there said the “analysts would fix the problem”. Hopefully soon, I know I’m not a shoe-in for A&M and I would like to apply as fast as possible! Thanks!

For what it’s worth, my brother-in-law went to A&M and an uncle of mine taught in their CS department.

Both enjoyed their respective stints there. They have a saying: “Gig 'em!”

Thanks, prebucky! I like hearing about people enjoying the colleges I’m looking at. It gives me a good feeling
about where I’m going. But I visited Austin just 3 weeks ago and it’s one of my favourite cities ever. It’s just awesome, TEXAS RULES!

Well, Texas A&M was able to get my class rank somehow, so my application isn’t stuck anymore. It’s now under review. Anyone have any idea how long they take to make a decision about acceptance? I hear anywhere from 2-4 weeks, but is it the same for OOS and those not under the 10% rule?
I also mailed my envelopes with my transcripts to Texas Tech and LSU today, since both school already got my SAT scores. I can’t wait to hear back from any of these schools!
Also, this saturday I’m taking the ACT! I have a good feeling, at least about the math section haha

If you still are looking for a few more schools to apply to,check out Virginia Commonwealth University and George Mason University in Virginia. They are largish public Unis and both have good engineering programs.

Have you tried putting your scores into the Supermatch tool (over on the left)?
