recommend me some private schools, please

I have a list of schools to look at however my Dad want's me to apply to some more private colleges.

White Jewish Male from Maryland

Looking to study Business, Sports Management, or Communications.

GPA- about a 3.2 right now, I had a 3.6 unweighted and a 3.8 weighted GPA this past school year (Junior) and my freshman year killed me with a 2.6. It will probably be around a 3.3 when I apply to colleges. I am also taking 2 AP's next year (only 4 are offered at my HS all at the upperclassmen level) and took 3 honors classes out of 5 this year.

I have a lot of EC's considering my school is tiny. I have played 3 different varsity sports, JV captain for basketball 2 years in a row, student leader program member, sports editor for newspaper, and have been in a couple of clubs.

I only got a 1600 on the SAT, but if I do another review course I think I could get a 1700, plus I would obviously study up on reading which killed me. 480 in reading, 550 in math, and 570 in writing.

I am taking the ACT Saturday and I am trying to get a 25. Right now I have private tutoring for it, and right now I am at around a 23/24.

Looking for schools that have any one of the three majors I want to go into, no catholic schools since I am Jewish which also means I don't want to go to a school with a very low Jewish population.

bbbuummmpp

Try Bentley or Babson.

Maybe Elon.

Sorry not Elon with GPA/SAT

Elon would be fine Business, Sports Management, or Communications, and Jewish is certainly OK - but they are much more selective. Sorry…

http://www.elon.edu/e-web/administration/institutional_research/CDS2008C.pdf

That’s why I put “maybe” in there. I went to the Elon website and looked at their 2008 set of Common Data and was surprised to see that 69% accepted students had an ACT between 24-29. If the OP get pull a 25 or 26, it might be worth putting Elon on the list as a Reach school.

Also, check out High Point as a match school.

I actually looked at High Point as a safety, but its 1 percent Jewish so no go.

High Point is not a good school…just a lot of fluff with fancy dorms, classrooms, etc. I used to go to a high school that was similar to High Point in terms of their priorities= huge mistake. High Point allows you to be pampered for 4 years and not really learn that much (sheerly terrible prsentation of their academics on an official tour). Sorry for my rant…

Def check out Elon; if you get a 25/26, you should be a viable candidate there. Best wishes! :)

Elon is definitely better but the OP needs to bring up that ACT score.

What is your priority–Major or % of Jewish students?

Springfield College

Well I want to do communications or sports management preferably but what matters to me most is where I would be the most happy. If I am at a good academic school, with a fun student life where I can find a major to pursue, I will be happy.

And I would prefer at least 5 % Jewish, thats the bare minimum.

Check out Springfield College. It has both Sports Management and Communications and seems to fit well with your statistics.

Get that SAT up and Syracuse might be worth a try.

Not real sure why your Dad is set on a private, but you might want to check out Goucher. They’ve got communications and management/international business. . . didn’t see sports but there are probably a couple of courses.

Ithaca College has Sports Management, might be a good choice, check that out.

According to Hillel, Springfield College is only about 2% jewish. You might want to take a look at University of Tampa.

I am going to second the recommendation of Syracuse. It is not a long shot but their Communications major is top notch so it is harder to get into that program. Syracuse has a fairly large number of Jewish students. I would also recommend Ithaca College. You have options

Ithaca is a reach until the SAT/ACT come up. Syracuse is a big reach and almost like a lottery ticket with your ACT/SAT scores. University of Tampa is a match but I don’t have any idea what the Jewish student population percentage is at the campus. You could also check out Adelphi. They have Sports Management, Communications, and Business.

Your Dad might want to consider branching out and including some publics in your college list. Also, keep an open mind about campuses and don’t rule a school out because it has less than 5% Jewish students on the campus. Perhaps focus more on the overall environment, student life, and student attitudes of the campus.

Good luck with your search. Be realistic in your list–competition is stiff and as much as we wish it didn’t matter, SAT/ACT are a big factor.

University of Miami has a pretty good size student Jewish population but they offer Sports Administration (not Sports Management). If you want to consider the University of Miami, the ACT needs to be at least in the 26-29 range.

When you research info about colleges, go to their website and in the search box, type “2008 Common Data Set”.
The info on the common data set pdf will give you a more accurate idea as to what the specific colllege’s criteria is for accepted students.

I am glad to hear that Ithaca and Syracuse aren’t too out of my range, I have visited both already, and I have a good connection to Syracuse that could help me get in.

We thought of Springfield, but the social life seems sub par there and I also visited Tampa a while back and I liked it there as well.

And we do have a lot of public schools on our list already, but we would like one more private.
