Recommendation letter from fired teacher

My Spanish 3 Honors teacher from junior year was fired. I had a good relationship with her and often asked questions in class. She said I was a great student.

I asked her for a Questbridge recommendation this year, which she is doing. I'm wondering if I should also ask her for my common app letter. I haven't seen her since the end of junior year, and I feel uncomfortable asking for two recs. Should I find another teacher?

If she is willing, why not! However, she is doing you a big favor and after she send the letters, you should send her a big thank you card for token appreciation. You may want to update her with your college decision, when April 1st rolls around and at that time perhaps a small token gift.

Best is to have someone in good standing at your school write your recommendations.

Agree with fogcity. Why was she fired?
Isn’t there someone else you can ask?

Yes, I could probably get a recommendation from someone else.

I’m not sure why she was fired. Mostly because of budget cuts I think (I live in California). It does make sense to ask someone in good standing. Thanks for the advice.

Being fired is a really different thing from losing your job due to budget cuts. Be careful about how you talk or post about what happened. Especially in this economy, people are seriously sensitive about the whole “fired” thing. Being fired means you have lost your job for something you have done wrong or not done well. Losing your job or being laid off are general categories that do not necessarily apply blame to the former employee. If you don’t know what happened, don’t say she was fired.

^Thanks for the post. I shouldn’t have used fired.

If she was laid off because of budget cuts, it would be perfectly reasonable to use her as a reference. Lots of people get references from teachers who have moved to another school, and she is essentially in that kind of category.

Now if she lost her job because of criminal activity, that would be a whole other story.
