Can someone help me find the recommendation letter requirements for Penn and Wellesley in terms of number and subject spefication?

gah I hate how all these colleges have all these different requirements as if life isn't already difficult enough!

like some colleges will gladly accept my Spanish teacher's rec while others insist that foreign languages don't count as "humanities".

and stupid Princeton just wants letters from "two different subjects" without specifying how different so I'm sitting here wondering if i can ask my bio and calc teachers to do two letters and just be done with it.

and why do WUSTL and Northwestern only ask for one? does that mean one teacher + one counselor, or just one letter period? If it's just one total, then sending two teacher recs on top of one counselor rec would be major overkill. should I even send another teacher rec, or will it look bad since they only ask for one?

wow okay haha i'm just really annoyed. i just spent a half hour combing college admissions websites for all their different teacher rec requirements. some of them are pretty good about stating exactly what they want in an "instructions" file while others are far more abstruse.

Thanks for anyone who clarifies/explains/helps!=)

U Penn:
Recommendations from guidance counselors, headmasters, and teachers, considered in concert with your classroom performance, give us a more subjective evaluation of your work. They provide a perspective that may not be evident from mere grades and scores. These commentaries are quite important, so it is best to find persons who are well acquainted with your work and potential. It is also helpful to us, and beneficial to you, to obtain a recommendation from a teacher in the area in which you think you might like to continue your studies.

Wash U: (1 teacher +1 counselor)
Does it help to have extra letters of recommendation sent on an applicant’s behalf?
Washington University requires information from the high school guidance counselor and one Teacher Evaluation from an academic teacher in high school with whom the student has taken a course. Extra letters are not required, but if you would like to submit additional letters, you are welcome to do so. For example, sometimes students choose to submit an extra letter of recommendation from a coach, an employer, or a member of the clergy because that person can provide unique insights that teachers may not include.

Wellesley: (2 teachers + 1 counselor)
14. Should I send extra letters of recommendation?
Extra letters of recommendation may be submitted; however, please remember that the two recommendations from teachers and the recommendation from your guidance counselor are all that we require of our applicants and that these recommendations frequently provide ample insight. If you feel that an additional recommendation might be important in evaluating your application (for example, a recommendation from your piano teacher from whom you have taken lessons for the past five years), you may submit it as a part of your application.

Supplemental forms
An application is not considered complete until we receive the necessary supplemental forms.
Secondary School Report (pdf) - required of all freshman applicants
Midyear Report (pdf) - required of all Regular Decision freshman applicants
Teacher Evaluation (pdf) - at least one evaluation is required..........................................

Hannahmontana, you may have already dug up some of the above-posted links. Penn's wording is kind of vague. It sounds like you only need one teacher rec, but you should probably call their admissions office to be sure. Wash U and Northwestern also only require one teacher rec, besides the counselor rec. So, it looks like Wellesley requires 2 teacher recs, as does Princeton. Here again, you might want to call Princeton's admissions office to have them clarify HOW different the 2 subjects have to be or post this question on the Princeton board if you haven't already. As long as you need 2 teacher recs for at least 2 of your schools, you might as well have them also sent to the schools that only require 1 teacher rec for a couple of reasons (NOTE:THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO A PARTICULAR TEACHER THAT YOU HAD A PROBLEM WITH ON ANOTHER THREAD):
1. The teacher is writing it anyway; it's no more work for him/her to send a copy to a few extra schools.
2. Just in case a teacher's rec is late in getting to Princeton or Wellesley, there is a "backup" rec in the file and they will proceed to process your application.
3. Even though Wash U and NU require only 1 teacher rec, they will accept extras.
4. It's good usually to have more than one perspective anyway.
I don't know which schools do/don't have a problem with a foreign language teacher writing a rec, but as long as you are calling admissions offices, ask them this too. Also, it wouldn't hurt to post that question on the CC board of those particular schools and see what people have done in the past.
Again, good luck.
