So i'm confused about all the RL stuff...do you or do you not get to see the recommendation written by your teacher...i mean how would you know which one to send out?

Ideally, you're not supposed to see it. Ideally, you pick a teacher (or teachers) that you think will show who you are, what you've done, and what kind of student you are the very best, and then trust that they will. At my HS, it was school policy that students did not see rec letters. That's just the way it was. You asked the teacher, if they said yes, you gave them your information, they wrote a letter, you gave them addressed, stamped enveloped, they sent it out. Done.

At my school, It was up to the teacher. I received a copy of one and never saw the other.

I'm getting a rec letter from a teacher.. but would a letter from my boss at work and an aunt/uncle who went to that college help at all?

i had a friend who asked for extra copies of the rec (obviously, he included a school he wasn't applying to) and took a look at the recs.

so it's not impossible to read them

Most schools ask for 2 recommendation letters from teachers of your junior or senior year. Some schools will also 'allow' you to send in additional rec letters from people that know you well. I wrote a letter for my D to Duke. Dartmouth also asks for a letter from a peer. You don't usually get to read those letters. Some kids have mentioned that they give self addressed/stamped envelopes to their teachers. My D's school was nice enough to get teachers' rec, transcript, school profile all together to send to each of college she is applying to.
