I can definitely get 2 recommendations lined up by teachers from school

1- Econ teacher who adores me and thinks i'm very smart and hardworking but also not a boring drone (Y)

2- Histo teacher who likes me all right and i know quite well and has helped me write very nice recs for summer programs in the past.

HOWEVER, i did an internship this summer in which i got to know the small team (at an NGO) very well, and the CEO is writing me a ref letter which I would also like to submit. How do i do this? Where on the common app is this an option? Or do I have to mail it separately?

Okay, wait. I just asked a graduate from my school who said she also sent in additional rec, and just asked the college counselling dept to mail it so I guess this is an option.

However, does anyone know if this must be done in PLACE of one of my 2 teacher recs? Or do most schools accept it as an additional supplement?

And if its better not to send in 2 teacher recs + 1 internship rec, what would be a better option for me? Histo teacher rec or CEO of internship company rec?

No, it must not be done in place of the two required teacher recommendations from core academic subjects. You may use the rec from your internship as a supplement.

Agreed: this letter needs to be in addition to the two letters from teachers, not in place of one of them.

A good rule of thumb about additional recommendations (I believe I read it from an admissions officer who posts on CC, but I could be inventing that) is that if you’re asked for n letters, it’s OK to send them n+1 if that additional letter really adds information the college wouldn’t get from your other recommendations. (It sounds as if this might be the case for you.) But don’t inundate them with letters from every adult you’ve ever met.

Colleges generally fall into the following groups:

Large number including most public universities which want no rec letters.

Those which want specific recs such as one teacher rec or two teacher recs, or a teacher rec and a counslors rec, and say they do not want any others.

Those which want one or two teacher recs and accept additonal recs which can be from virtually anyone.

You cannot replace a required teacher rec with a non-teacher rec. Before sending any recs you must check to determine which group above the college falls within. It is only the third group for which you can send that extra rec letter from a non-teacher. If you cannot find way to do it on common app then letter should just be mailed to admissions office by the person who prepares it and should include enough of your identifying information – name and school and possibly address – so it can be matched with your application file.
