Recommendations please kind sirs and madams?

Please recommend some colleges. At the moment I'm pretty clueless on what I want.

GPA:3.6 - Did bad freshman year, but doing much better since then.

AP's and Honors:3 Honors classes and 1 AP so far - next year I will be taking 3 AP's

Class Size/School:Not sure about class size, but should be from 500 ~ 1000. I am at a very competitive school (Bronx HS of Science) Top 20 high schools in the nation.

SAT/ACT scores: M: 780 R: 570 W: 570 Composite Score: 1920
SAT II scores: None yet, but planning to take Math IIc and either Biology/Chemistry/Physics

EC's: -80 hours of volunteer service at a local clinic aiming to aid low income Asian Americans - looking to increase amount of hours
-Math Team for 2 years - 3rd year could not make it due to scheduling difficulties but made the cut for the team - definitely taking it next year
-Officer of Journey to Chinese Culture Club

Weak EC's I know.

Additional Information:-Asian American Male in NY
-Low income family - Dad is retired and Mom is practically doing a commission job.
-First generation - father and mother did not go to college
-Looking to become a doctor <~ might be kinda stereotypical for an asian to become a doctor but it isn't due to family pressure or anything like that, but is for mainly that I would like to help people

I'm not sure where to place this but I am going to submit a project into the Intel competition if that counts as anything.

Is English your second language? Your scores are a little unbalanced to say the least. The SUNYs are always good of course. I’m guessing money is going to be a pretty big factor for you. They might give you some merit aid.

if you consider learning chinese first before pre-k and then learning english from there, then yes it is a second language

oh i forgot to mention that besides SUNYs and CUNYs, if i could get any recommendations on other schools like BC or BU

anyone recommend any schools?

Some schools to possibly check into are BU, American, GWU, Northeastern, Rutgers, Bing, Stony Brook, WPI and Case Western. BC is a reach.

I would recommend some schools in the Midwest.

Do you prefer LAC’s or Universities or are you open?

Yes, since you knew Chinese before kindergarden, and learned English at kindergarden, English is your second language, and that’s important re: your college applications, because you are lopsided re: SATs - your math is far, far stronger than your CR and writing.

The Intel competition is extremely prestigious. To enter is a big deal. If you actually end up doing well in the competition, that is a very big deal. It should be on your college applications.

For pre-med, for someone good in science and math, I’d suggest you look at: SUNY Stony Brook (really needs to be on your list. Great in the sciences, and a SUNY), Holy Cross, U Colorado Boulder, Johns Hopkins, U Washington, Penn State University Park, Ohio State, Rutgers New Brunswick, Carnegie Mellon, Rice, Boston U, Purdue West Lafayette, U Florida, NYU, U Rochester, U Minnesota Twin Cities, U Texas Austin, Washington U in Saint Louis, UMass Amherst, U Wisconsin Madison, U Illinois Urbana, Emory, Baylor, Vanderbilt.

Some of those are reach schools, others more fit schools. And when you apply, since financial aid will be an issue, make sure you apply to some SUNYs, and to some specific schools that have a history of offering very good financial aid, such as U Maryland College Park, Grinnell, Vassar, Lehigh, Lafayette U, North Carolina State U.

I’d have you apply to at least two SUNYs - Stony Brook for sure, and maybe one of the smaller SUNYs, like Geneseo. This is to be sure that you have two relatively inexpensive, but good, schools on your list.

Also apply to one CUNY, if you don’t mind - Hunter would be a good one. It’d be a backup school, but there’s also the chance that it could be very cheap for you. Apply to the CUNYs via the Macaulay Honors program. If you get into that program, it’s a free ride, plus they give you a stipend and a free laptop, and other goodies.

I am open to LAC’s or Universities! Thank you so much to everyone so far!

Definitely look into the University of Minnesota. It has one of the cheapest OOS tuitions in the country, gives pretty good aid, and is AMAZING in the sciences. Plus you are right in Minneapolis which is sweet and there is tons to do.

I’d also check out Wisconsin Madison but that is harder to get into and costs quite a bit more.

anyone else?

Creighton University in Nebraska…BRRRR! I know that sounds so cold, but they have good pre-med and pre-dental programs. You should fit nicely with your stats, keep it up, an upward trend is very important to admissions comittees. Also you may find that some of the private Catholic schools give very nice merit aid, especially when a student is coming from out of their georaphic area. You might benefit from as long as you keep the grades up.

ooh i like the cold good for snowboarding

any other colleges?

In no particular order, schools of varying admissions difficulty but should be within reach: Tulane, Colorado College, Pitzer, Occidental, UGA, Florida, UMiami, Villanova, TCNJ, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Illinois, Ohio State, Penn State, James Madison, George Washington, Maryland, Illinois Wesleyan, Sewanee, Rochester, Texas (only if you’re top 10% of ur class tho), Syracuse, Pepperdine, Pittsburgh, SMU, UConn, Indiana, Michigan State, Colorado, Union, Dickinson, Centre, Skidmore, St. Olaf, Rhodes
