Chance me I guarantee to chance you back!

Please recommend some colleges. At the moment I'm pretty clueless on what I want.

GPA:3.6 - Did bad freshman year, but doing much better since then.

AP's and Honors:3 Honors classes and 1 AP so far - next year I will be taking 3 AP's

Class Size/School:Not sure about class size, but should be from 500 ~ 1000. I am at a very competitive school (Bronx HS of Science) Top 20 high schools in the nation.
I am top 35%

SAT/ACT scores: M: 780 R: 570 W: 570 Composite Score: 1920
SAT II scores: None yet, but planning to take Math IIc and either Biology/Chemistry/Physics

EC's: -80 hours of volunteer service at a local clinic aiming to aid low income Asian Americans - looking to increase amount of hours to 300+
-Math Team for 2 years - 3rd year could not make it due to scheduling difficulties but made the cut for the team - definitely taking it next year
Cross Country and Outdoor Track for Junior Year

Weak EC's I know.

Honors/Awards: - Arista Honor Society
- 2nd place in a local writing competition on grandparents
- Humanitarian Award from Community

Recs/Essays: - Recs from Guidance Counselor: Awesome
-Recs from Teachers: Between Good to Awesome
-Essays: Kick Asssss

Additional Information:-Asian American Male in NY
-Low income family - Dad is retired and Mom is practically doing a commission job.
-First generation - father and mother did not go to college
-Looking to become a doctor <~ might be kinda stereotypical for an asian to become a doctor but it isn't due to family pressure or anything like that, but is for mainly that I would like to help people
-English as second language

I'm not sure where to place this but I am going to submit a project into the Intel competition if that counts as anything.

These are the schools I'm looking at so far. I know most of them are reaches. Just want to see if they are in range or well out of range. I excluded SUNY's and CUNY's here, but feel free to recommend me any other schools!

Amherst
Bard
Boston College
Boston University
Carleton College
Carnegie Mellon
Cuny Brooklyn for their Accelerated Program in Medicine
Sophie Davis for Accelerated Program in Medicine
Colgate
Columbia
Cornell University
John Hopkins
Juniata
Lehigh
NYU
NorthWestern
Oberlin
Purdue
RPI
Rice
University of Michigan
University of Pennsylvania
University of Vermont
University of Virginia
Vanderbilt
Villanova
Washington St. Louis
Wesleyan

Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Carnegie, and UPenn seem like the toughies for you…they might be a little out of reach. The things that really hurt you are the SAT score and your GPA :frowning: It puts you at an immediate disadvantage…
That said, your 80+ hrs of Asian American aid or whatever is quite impressive! Seriously elaborate big time about that on your app  Since you’re Asian too you can talk about your experiences and how you were able to relate to them on some level, blah blah blah…that could be the one thing that makes you human and pop out from a pile of papers
I think you’ve got a really good shot at a lot of colleges you put down, esp. Amherst, Boston College, Colgate, NYU, Oberlin, Purdue, U. Michigan, U. Vermont, U. Virginia, Villanova, and Wesleyan…good luck!
p.s. if you chance me back i’d <3 you :P

bumpers =)

anyone chance me please?

Ditto to the colleges that guy said above. But I’d say your chances at Amherst and Wesleyan are pretty slim, as well as Washington University in St. Louis. But you definitly have a shot, I’d say apply to them.

Chance me back!

ur SAT scores need a little work. I suggest maybe taking TOEFL?
colleges dont care if you “truely want to be a doctor”. Id suggest ED JHU or Northwestern because they have ridiculously high ED rate. Hopkins is like 40% acceptance rate ED. It is definitely among the top feeders for Med school.

im eager to hear your opinion: Chance an student from a Private High School!!!

thanks for the ED info asian at lab - really nice to know

i would really like chances at these colleges specifically:

washu
cornell
jhu
wesleyan
carleton
umich
sophie davis
cmu

thanks!

also could you please leave a link to your chance page - it would help lol

bumpers 10char

bumpers :(

A lot of those schools are reaches because one of the most important admissions requirements are the SAT I which doesn’t look so good. You definitely have to retake that test and make sure you score high on the SAT II’s

^ Here’s my link ^____^

GPA is pretty good; Bronx Science is one of the only schools in NYC that I respect, and I’m sure colleges do too  Your ECs could be improved upon…so maybe a shot at BU, Brooklyn, Juniata, Lehigh, Purdue, RPI, UVM, and Villanova. The others, for the most part, are reaches. I’d recommend retaking the SAT.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/699897-am-i-track-ivies-duke-wake-vanderbilt.html</a> Chance me back please! Thanks!

I am not too sure, but Cornell, CMU, JHU, and WashU look to be tough for you because of lower SAT and GPA (but you’re in a tough high school). I think you got a good shot at UMich and Sohpie Davis; Wesleyan looks to be on bubble. I think that you should look at VCU (pretty good med. I think). 'Grats on awesome essays!

Bronx High School of Science is definitely respected amongst colleges. That will help you a lot. However, being 35% in the class might hurt you because that means that there are plenty of applicants that are more qualified. That said, I think Columbia is almost impossible for you because of such high competition in New York. Washington St. Louis is also very difficult as well as Cornell.
I think you have a decent shot at schools such as Sophie Davies and one of my personal favorite medical schools, NYU. I think NYU would be a good match for you because I know people that got in for Pre-Med with similar stats. Anyways Good Luck. I hope everything works out for you. Chance Back?

bumper sticker

A caution about ED: You need to read the specific college’s terms and conditions for ED because ED is binding. Meaning that once you are accepted you have to go there. That could bring some complications esp because when signing up for ED, most of the time you basically waive any chance of financial aid. I read on your post that you come from a low income family so that might be problematic. Do look into it before making any decisions.

If any of your colleges are EA (early action), that could be helpful because it’s ED minus the binding/most likely no FA factors.

I agree with the others that from just the numbers, you look weak. i don’t know you personally and I don’t know if your essay/letter of rec are really as good as you say. If you want me to look at your essay, I’d be happy to give you suggestions and feedbacks, as I have gone through this process already.

Since you have time, you should study SAT prep books intensively this summer and retake it in the fall because your scores right now are not looking too hot.
