when is the best time to start asking profs for recommendations for a fall transfer? should i do it before the christmas break? ive already talked to my advisor about it who also happens to teach one of my classes, so i guess ill just need one more, but is it best to do it now or wait until second semester starts?

Do it now so that your professor have more time to write a better recommendation.

I'm doing mine now because of the newly added winter session at my school and some of those professors aren't going to have class over winter. But yeah the sooner the better

I just gave mine to them this past week. I'd go ahead and do it if you've got everything ready.

it seems so early.... no?

i thought that after winter break would be more appropriate and they will at least have your grades and stuff..?

i don't think your grades will matter that much...if you're asking a teacher you have now, they'll already have an idea of what kind of student you are and the rec will be more about your character.

My profs were all really happy I'd gotten it to them this early...so I guess it is early, but never too early really.

ughhh i have never spoken to any of my profs

how screwed am i

You can do it now or do it after December break. Do it when you feel comfortable, but don't feel you need to do it right this minute. (This assumes your apps are due around March). Talking to them just before or after December break will still give them plenty of time.

You can also do it both ways ;), by asking now or before break if they would be willing to write a rec for you and asking them whether they would prefer you to provide the stamped envelopes/forms now or at some other time.

Also ask if they would like you to provide any other info (some may want a resume, discussion of why you've chosen the schools you are applying to, grades in other courses).

Are recommendations suppose to be written by professors you had during the first semester?

Is anything wrong with getting rec's from professors from the second semester?

Theoretically getting recs from a second semester prof. would be OKAY...but you should give AT LEAST a month's notice for recs...sooo. If 1st day of classes is Jan 15 and recs are due March 1st...they've known you for less than two weeks when you're asking them to do your recs. I'd suggest a first semester prof...plus colleges might wonder why you didn't select a 1st semester professor.
