I was just accepted to Berkeley's astrophysics program and I wanted to know what classes I should take my first year there. Should I go easy in the number of classes I take? Or should I worry more about finding some of the simpler classes, so that I can really try to figure out college?

It would be great if some recommendations were given on exactly which classes to take in my major! And maybe some tips on how to handle them too?

College is different for everyone, but I can give my two cents.

Since it seems you know what major you want, definitely take a look at the different requirements you’ll need and write them all down somewhere (starting a google drive for this would be good). If you’re looking into only 1 major, you’ll have plenty of time to fulfill all your major requirements as well as take other classes for fun. And also remember that you need to fulfill other requirements like the 7 Course Breadth, the two reading requirements (R1B and R1A), the foreign language, etc. A few of these may have already been fulfilled through your high school work so you can check that later on.

At least for me, I REALLY wish someone had told me to be careful about choosing first semester classes. I jumped right in, and out of my 4 classes, 3 were major requirements and 1 was a class intended for upperclassmen (16 units overall). Needless to say, that semester was super difficult. If I could go back, I’d definitely take only 1 major requirement and a couple fun classes that also satisfied some Breadth requirement. If I could go back I would NOT take 16 units but instead around 13.
