So I just finished filling out the CSS and the Fafsa. Now I am looking into possibly entering scholarship contests. The issue is that there are so many and I'm not sure which ones are good, and which are worth my time. I'm still very new to this so I need some help.

I am an Asian who is interested in studying Engineering and I have around a 3.7 GPA and a 2000 SAT score. My EFC is not high, in fact it is less than 1,000. I don't know if that is good or not. My extracurricular activities are pretty good in my opinion.

I looked into the APIASF scholarship, is that one good?
How hard it is to win that scholarship? and is it worth it?
What about the Gates Scholarship?
What other scholarship companies, where the deadline hasn't passed yet, do you recommend I look into?

I have a lot of school work to do this week, so before I put so much time into writing these essays, I need some information on which programs are actually worth applying to.

How do you figure you’re eligible for the Gates???

I realize that you would like us to do your research for you. That would of course save you quite a bit of time. But you should at least look at the eligibility requirements for the scholarships you are considering!

^That’s the other thing^
I don’t know how to find out if I am eligible.
I looked up on their website and aside from the race/gpa requirement. I’m not sure what the other requirements, such as the “Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria,” even means.

^No that’s the thing, I have the GPA, Ethnicity, and the Residency status requirement.^
The only thing I’m not sure about are the detailed requirements like “federal pell grant” and the specific forms they ask.

You are only Pell-eligible if your EFC is 0, which yours is not. I will agree that you seem to want others to do your research for you with regards to looking for scholarships-- come back with specific questions, not a requrest for us to suggest every scholarship you might be eligible for!

Just in case there’s any confusion, Asian and “Asian Pacific Islander” are NOT the same thing - and only the latter are eligible for the Gates scholarship.

I’d always thought the Gates scholarship was for minorities. I guess not. It’s just not for kids whose ancestors come from Europe (unless of course they’re from Spain) or the British Isles. Doesn’t matter if you live in Kentucky and your parents are coal miners - that’s not disadvantaged by Gates Foundation standards. :(
