It is likely I will get 2-3 Bs this semester. But all my other semesters were pretty much straight A's (a couple B's here and there). Also, if you are way poorer than other applicants, would they take that into account?

I’m not applying to this scholarship and I accidentally stumbled upon this page but I can say that I don’t think GPA/SAT matters as much as the services you do.

We had 3 kids win it last year from our school.

Black male - 3.6W GPA, 1700 SAT
Hispanic female - 4.1GPA, 1600ish SAT
Black male - low 3s GPA and 1500ish total SAT.

^Damn. That is pretty crazy. Would you say the stats for Asians are different?

You’d definitely be competing with a stronger group.

It really does all come down to community service and extracurriculars

Why would the stats for Asians be different? That is stereotyping Asians as higher scoring…and GMS/APIASF is partially about not stereotyping. And GMS is much more community service/leadership based rather than GPA based. That being said, of course it is competitive and you can’t have a super low GPA; but it’s not like it’s as serious about gpa as college apps or certain scholarships.

They do not take how poor you are in account, as long as you meet requirements (qualify for pell grant).

I called their office and they said the same thing. Well, I’ll definitely still write about it.

Wait, so for Asians, GMS selection is done through APIASF?

One more thing:
How do you distinguish between a leadership activity and community service? I don’t think I was almost never more than a volunteer (though I have volunteered at many places). Can you put other extracurriculars on your list, even if they aren’t community service (i.e. research internships)? What if you do not have any honors/awards (I don’t have anything). Just as a side note, would another competitive scholarship be considered an honor (I haven’t won any nor do I know about my chances; I’m just wondering).

Thanks for all your help NYSP2010. I really do appreciate it.

I know GMS selection is done through a selection committee by GMS. I don’t know if they specifically have people from APIASF on that committee just for Asian applicants, but I do know that the acceptances were mailed out by the ethnicity-specific groups (APIASF, etc.)

Oh yeah, back to the original question of this topic. Since you’re trying to get stats from recipients (not all finalists are recipients so i assume you mean recipients?)

Me:
2070 SAT (But they don’t even ask this on the application)
5 AP tests (since at the time of applying i hadn’t done my senior year ones) with one 5 in US History, 3 fours in LangComp Spanish Language and World History and one three in Chemistry
4.5 Weighted/3.9 Unweighted GPA/ranked 8 in class of ~800
Japanese Culture Club (VP Jr and Sr year), Interact Club (District Student Council 1 year, Club Treasurer sr year), NHS (Jr and Sr year), Local Chinese Catholic Community (Altar Server, part of youth group, led some bible studies, volunteered at events, went to monthly business meetings, since summer before 8th grade), Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp (one week in summer before senior year). I think that was basically what I put on my application
Awards: School Academic Award (not being specific cuz it’ll say where I went to high school and I don’t want to say that), Principal’s Honor Roll, Bronze Award for Community Service, Interact Award for Outstanding Service.

The only other person in my high school that ever got this was in the year before, and I remember she was around rank 15, took less AP than I did but did a lot of community service in her church. I don’t really know much about her stats so I can’t say a lot, but I think she had really good essays and nomination/recommendation and really strong leadership&community service&character.
