"Recommended" Three Subject Tests

Basically, I have no desire to take a third subject test. My math 2 and lit scores are good, but chem makes me sad. Why does the Northwestern app say "recommended" but not "required"? Is it just a severe disadvantage if you don't have 3?

Thanks.

This was my question as well a month ago.

It won't end up being a big deal if your scores are decent; of course if you bomb that third one, it becomes a big deal.

In short, take the third if you wish, but it wont really hurt you. Take the third if you plan to major in that field.

now what if you dont take any of the recommended subject tests? Im just sending in my ACT, is that a disadvantage at all?

"Take the third if you plan to major in that field."

that's the thing...i have no interest in chem whatsoever. i'm planning on majoring in econ/math, so i got that covered with my math subject test.

and to trnr...i assume 0 subject tests is even worse than 2 subject tests lol.

i don't think that not having subject tests hurts you (wow, awkwardly worded sentence..)... i just think that having them can possibly help

Yeah I didn't end up sending any of my subject tests. I figured the scores weren't high enough. I ended up getting in, so there ya go. : )

I sent in three mediocre subject tests just for kicks, and I got in as well. Don't sweat it.

yeah, unless it's one of the programs that requires subject tests, not having them won't hurt you.. it just doesn't help you

Actually, high scores in all your subject tests can help you. I mean, if i was an adcom, id rather have someone with 2100 sats with 800s on 3 sat 2s rather than someone with 2150 sats and no subject tests.</p>

It even says it on NU's app, high scores on subject tests can offset low sat I scores.
